5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best...., February 12, 2006
By C. Craig (Havant, England, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Cab Calloway is all too easily seen as the flamboyant
Heigh-De-Ho man with flowing white tails and flopping hair, but he consistently led a disciplined and superbly crafted outfit. His output in terms of quality rarely faltered, and he had an amazing vocal range which is all too often underrated. Excellent sidemen like Chu Berry, Milt Hinton, and Cozy Cole added to his jazz interest over the years, and gave his band a tremendous esprit de corps reflected in the inspirational sounds he so often managed to produce. These relatively late recordings from 1942-47 show just how true this was.

5.0 out of 5 stars General Calloway...., was his rank., September 24, 2002
General Calloway was what the boys in his band would call him. He was a devoted and stern band leader. These songs are what you may have missed on all of the other albums of his. What's not on those are on this one. A few familiar ones, and a few unheard ones. They're all of his great toe tapping creations. My favorites are: "Dawn time," and the fun song: "A blue serge suit with a belt in the back." The song, "The honeydripper," will make you want to twist your hips to the beat. The song, "I got a gal named Nettie," was the song Cab sung in his own movie:(Hi-De-Ho.)Also, "Hi-De-Ho man," was done on that same movie. Another recommendation is deemed for your jazz collection.
