International pop star and European parliamentarian Nana Mouskouri is a living monument to the notion of "middle of the road." Greek folk music, Italian opera, French chanson, light classicism, and many other styles all come together in a vocal franchise (more than 200 million copies of her albums sold). On Concert for Peace, recorded in New York's St. John's Cathedral with the assistance of orchestra and chorus, the square-spectacled soprano sings in half a dozen languages and puts Beethoven, Bizet, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and even gospel great Mahalia Jackson through the homogenizer in the name of--you guessed it--peace. While her squeaky-clean voice may not soar as powerfully as in the past (whose does?), Mouskouri remains the Great Comforter of the international pop style. --Richard Gehr
