Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

Director Adrian Lyne's controversial update of novelist Vladimir Nabokov's classic meditation on morality and modern culture (which struggled to find a distributor because of its forbidden theme--a man's erotic obsession with a 12-year-old girl) found itself overshadowed in 1998 by a Washington morality play whose own human subtleties were relegated to the margins by politics. What shouldn't be overlooked is Ennio Morricone's masterful score. Many of the composer's familiar devices are present--stately melodies carried by elegantly mournful strings, subtle electronic colorations, chromatically adventuresome choral writing--but presented with such musical shading and emotional delicacy as to sound completely original. The main theme, set against subtly shifting piano arpeggios and gently welling strings, is generated by ethereal, nearly intangible electronic sources--another haunting masterpiece by a composer from whom we've come to expect nothing less. "Requiescant," another standout cue, revisits Morricone's penchant for choral writing, in this case a boy's choir set amid a sometimes atonal and overwhelming wash of strings and electronics--another composer might be as daring, but none would match il Maestro's gripping emotional efficacy. To underscore the story's late-'40s period and themes, several well-chosen pop tracks have been woven into Morricone's score (including Vera Lynn's "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Tain't What You Do" by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima's loopy "Civilization [Bongo, Bongo, Bongo]") and offer an unexpected--and amusing--contrast to the composer's own marvelous efforts. A must for Morricone lovers. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music that mad the movie complete, September 29, 1999
By A Customer
There are sparatic 40's style gems amongst the most beautiful new classical music I think I have ever heard as a soundtrack. Track 20 'ladies and gentelmen of the jurry' is a slow, intense theme which will have you thinking about it for months after listening to it. There are a few classical ones that you may skip over because of their direct tie with the movie (they don't really work just as songs.) Overall, the movie was a beautiful rendition of a book of genius, and this soundtrack does both justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will reduce you to tears, January 30, 2000
By Dale Holmgren (Millbrae, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As you've noted from the other commentaries, the "classic" songs from other artists can jar the Morricone mood, but this is the most sensual music he's ever written, even better than Cinema Paridiso, Love Affair, or The Mission, my other favorites. We can only hope his son Andrea continues the magnificent output after Ennio can do so no longer. Meanwhile, long live Ennio. This is elegant, wistful, understated brilliance.

If I could describe to you the Soundtrack Lolita in two words, I would have to say breath taking! I mean when you listen to the music flow into your ears, you can't help but close your eyes to imagine what part of the movie is playing at that brief moment in time. I would totally recomend this soundtrack to any movie music lover, Me being a collector of soundtracks loves this Score by Ennio Morricone. He has created a masterpiece!
