5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection by one of the great cowboy singers, August 31, 2002
Of all the singing cowboys, Gene Autrey had the warmest, mellowest voice. In his movies, he smiled as he sang, and you can hear the smile in his recordings. He was a big-hearted guy with a sunny disposition, the antithesis of the two-fisted sharp shooter. When Gene sings "Back in the Saddle Again," you feel that he meant every word of it.

I picked up this CD on a cross-country roadtrip that took me through cowboy country, and it was a pleasure hearing again these songs while driving through ranchland and panhandle towns. The old familiar tunes are great to hear (and there are so many of them on this CD), but I was even more struck by the sincerity of them and the range of feeling, from the rousing "Deep in the Heart of Texas" to the poignant "South of the Border." He makes you yearn for a vanished world, even while you know it probably never existed anywhere outside the movies.

This CD is excellent value, with 26 songs, plus an insert with a brief account of his recording and movie career. There's also a great autographed glamour shot of him (circa 1940), with his trademark smile and white hat.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR THE PRICE, April 26, 2000
By PATRICIA T. ALMDALE (AULANDER, NC USA) - See all my reviews
AS A AVID GENE AUTRY FAN WHO HAS EVERY CD I CAN FIND BY HIM, THIS ONE IS GREAT FOR THE PRICE. THE SOUND IS AS GOOD AS SOME OF THE COSTLIER ONES. THIS IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF THE TALENTED AND GREAT ENTERTAINER THAT HE WAS. I RECOMMEND THIS ONE HIGHLY FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NEVER BOUGHT ONE AND JUST WANTS TO SEE WHAT A GREAT ENTERTAINER HE WAS. JUST TRY IT AND YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH THAT MELLOW VOICE THAT BELONGED TO GENE AUTRY, AND YOU'LL SOON BE LOOKING FOR MORE OF HIS CD'S.

5.0 out of 5 stars cowboy songs sung the cowboy way, October 12, 2000

(REAL NAME)
'Take Me Back to my Boots and Saddle' is worth the price of this album. I can't help singing along every time I hear this song. But in addition to that you get 'Mexicali Rose', 'Dust', 'The Last Round-up', 'South of the Border', and more and more. The only disapointment is 'Sue City Sue' isn't included. I love this album.
