5.0 out of 5 stars Creativity and Content, December 10, 2002
First and foremost I must confess that I am a middle aged father and a RUSH fan extaordinaire, that being said I find lyrical content as equally important as the music which it is contained within. Please avoid the travesty of NOT buying this disc.

First listen got my attention but failed to really grab me as let's say, Symphony X's V CD did, which is also a great CD. It was not until I put on my Grado headphones and really listened, I mean intently listened to the whole album all the way through, did I get it.

Musically profficient, lyrically honest and collectively moving - this effort earned a spot in my elite "best of" library. Thirty+ people can't be wrong when rating this album 4 stars or better. I signed their guestbook and one of the band members emailed me back thanking me for my support, this is not your average band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top five rock concept album, February 7, 2004
By A Customer
It's a masterpiece. It was my first Shadow Gallery album, I wanted to check them out, and it was the right decision. From the first listen, I knew these guys are on the top of the Prog Rock/Metal bands of the era, second only to the Dream Theater gods. Tyranny is very melodic, intelligent, vocals are excellent (the guests add even more beauty). Shadow Gallery style is less heavy than Dream Theater, but DT's influence can be felt (It's prog after all!!). I felt also a slight influence by Yes, yet I am not sure. Get this album, in fact buy all of their albums, I got them after Tyranny and they are as good if not better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely First-Rate Prog Masterpiece, November 27, 1999
This is the only recent album in the oeuvre of any prog band that deserves a 5 star status. In today's heavy prog-rock canon, Dream Theater, Queensryche and Fates Warning hold the flame burning bright. Tyranny, by Shadow Gallery, is the album I like the best.

To my ears, DT are too enamored with their own instrumental prowess and tend to be far too overbearing (if this is your cup of tea, feel free to ignore my review!). In Tyranny, Shadow Gallery have found the perfect balance between complex "prog" instrumentation and wonderful melodies that work beautifully. In best prog fashion, Tyranny is a concept album, about a defense engineer who is tired of making means of destruction and who, with the help of a female accomplice tries to topple the powers that be. In this respect the album reminds me of The Wall by PF, an album that I have to listen to from beginning to end, it is "one" single opus. What is amazing about the album is its musical variety: fast, thundering workouts and wonderful, heartfelt ballads. This is as good an album as I own (and I own over 3000 CDs).
