3.0 out of 5 stars Ho, hum., June 19, 2000
By Charles (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
"Live At Donnington" is a good buy for anyone who wants to have the live tracks of these songs. But there are a couple problems with this album. First is the sound and production quality. I have a hard time experiencing the energy of the music. It sounds most of the time as though the bass is turned up just for the sake of being more prominent, and tends to bury the guitar sounds. Dave and Janick are a bit out of sync and don't feel very dynamic together.

In comparison, if you listen to "Live After Death" you will see how tight and dynamic the band plays as a unit.

The second problem with the album is the song selection. This album was recorded on the "Fear of the Dark" tour. That album, I think I can safely say, is the least liked Maiden album among long-time fans. (Excepting the Blaze Bayley albums.) This album has 5 Fear of the Dark songs. It practicaly skips the "Piece of Mind", "Powerslave" and "Somewhere In Time" with one song from each.

I will get almost anything from Maiden, but I can't help being a little diappointed with this. I would recommend "Live after Death" first; it's a must have. If you are trying to decide over whether to get "Live at Donnington" or "A Real Live Dead One", Donnington's still the better sounding and the track listing is almost identical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Donnington I was thinking of., November 9, 1999
By A Customer
Here it is. For those of you who didn't get the limitededition two disc original, Steve and the boys have re-released it foryou with new packaging. Man, what a cover! Plus they've done right give you value for money with an enhance section of live performances that you can access with a computer. Look at all the stuff you get for a measly fifteen or eighteen bucks! Wwwwwwwwaaaaaoooooowwwww! Now these guys have difinitely been here for nearly twenty years and it shows. First they packaged the "Best of the Beast" collection in a hardbound booklette that slides into a carrying case, and now they re-release the whole smourgesboard of backlogue! Thank you God! What a Band, eh?

Hear the crowd roar as "Be quick or Be Dead" opens a night of heavy metal magic. Overall the tracks are all from the Maiden classics list, but then again just about every song from them is a classic ! This band would struggle to put a set of songs together that no one liked very much because there are so few of them. Maybe not even ten in total, or less than five. In any case there is a lot more crowd in this release as Bruce talks to the audience more often than on the "Live After Death" release. You'll get your chance to "scream for me" for Bruce on plenty of occasions, in the comfort of your home/car. And if you listen to it from start to finish you'll be pleasantly surpirsed by the cameo appearance of a certain ex-cohort on the last tack. Also, on the last track, you'll get your chance to scream your approval of this excellent recording as Bruce asks, "Have you,....Have you all had a great time tonight?", and hear those ninety-thousand plus voices rise from the crowd to stamp their approval! Put your trousers on and buy this record! END

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn the bass down!!!!!, January 4, 2002
THis is a great live record with many maiden classics for you to enjoy(read the track listing). Some people argue that the production is not as good as the production for the "Live After Death " CD,but I thing they are dead wrong. If you are listening to this CD with the bass turned up really loud the Production seems a bit out of whack.Steve Harris must have wanted to make shure we could hear every note he played. If you just turn the bass down the production is every bit as good as "Live A.D." The only problem I have with Live Maiden records is most of them have the same songs .How many Versions of "Number of the Beast," "Two minutes to midnight," and "Wrathchild" do we really need? I wish they would change up some. Maybe play some songs off of the "Somewhere it Time" Album.I would really love to have a live version of the song "Alenxander the great" (who wouldent.) THis is a MUST HAVE for any maiden fan ...Put it in the cart.
