Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Southwest F.O.B. was a groovy, harmony-laced Dallas, Texas combo that owed as much to the Association as it did to the trippy new sounds of the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Shining a multi-hued spotlight on the heavenly harmonies of Dan Seals and John Colley (soon to become the chart-topping duo of England Dan & John Ford Coley), Southwest F.O.B.'s only album, Smell of Incense, also laid on plenty of Country Joe-like Farfisa. This hefty exact replica of the original 1968 Hip Records LP will immediately transport you to a ballroom full of sweet smoke with kaleidoscopic patterns flashing on the wall, free apples at the door and people swaying everywhere to totally irresistible rock 'n' roll. Next stop, Nirvana! --This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than You Might Think, July 2, 2003
By Discowarp (Nova Anglaterra) - See all my reviews
I'm listening to this right now, and it's been in my changer for about a week---mixing it up with the likes of Woody Shaw, Keith Jarrett, Enrico Rava, and The Fallen Angels. It holds up well in such company, and even makes one sit and take notice! Great covers of "Rock 'N' Roll Woman" and "Feelin' Groovy"---and a "Nadine" that will knock your socks off. Very pretty ballad "And Another Thing" combines Beatlesque vocal harmony with Paul Simon acoustic guitar thing. Astute musicianship throughout---and some suprising jazzy touches. Sorta like Circus Maximus here and there. A little on the pop side of the lyte sike dial---but a champ in that division. Delightful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lost 60's Pop, October 3, 2008
If you like the Byrds, Love and The Beach Boys then you will really love this record. It is in the same vein as the Sagittarius album Present Tense except less hippy dippy and more power pop. If you're a fan of this era of music then don't pass up this record. It deserves to be a lot better known and the drummer (whose name I can't remember) is one of the best I've ever heard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nadine............That's It., July 19, 2001
By williambourque (Waltham, Ma) - See all my reviews
Southwest F.O.B. was Dan Seals and John Colleys' music catapult to semi-stardom. This album contains all their released tracks, and as Sundazed usually does, features unreleased photos and songs. What I had a problem with was the lack of any ear grabbin or even finger snapping music. "Smell of Incense" might have been a good enough single then, but now, it sounds a lot like rehashed wanna-be psychedelia. The vocals are not to the forefront enough for such a talented vocal combo being present. To make matters worse, "Downtown Woman" is not remastered in stereo like it's medley counterpart, "Nadine", the only song on this album that stands alone. If only the whole album were composed of remixes it mightv'e got a higher rating. Get their seventies stuff.
