Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
"I got a new haircut / It cost me just six bucks." As if to prove that California doesn't have a lock on retro punk in its many incarnations, this Australian trio returns with a fourth album of Who-like riffing melodicism, with a heavy dose of self-deprecatory lyrics delivered replete with well-turned backing vocals. You Am I are huge at home, while their efforts--like 60 Ft Dolls' similarly excellent Big Three--go mostly ignored in the States. Too bad; Green Day fans might find some kindred spirits here. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars The best band America's never heard..., May 22, 1999
By A Customer
Australia's great You Am I should be massive. They're smart, they write great songs, they put on an absolutely INCREDIBLE live show...THEY JUST PLAIN ROCK. But due to prodigous record label bumbling, their discs sit on shelves collecting dust. (Hourly, Daily is worth whatever you gotta pay for it) #4 Record is a guitar rock record, loud and noisy, but great songs there at the core. If you like the Replacements, the Kinks, the Who, garage rock, etc, you'll love You Am I. It took me exactly one live show, and I was buying everything I could find. Tim Rogers is one of the best songwriters on the planet, and Andy and Rusty are perfect complements. Time to wake up, America...

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Riffs, June 18, 2001
By "joone" (Australia) - See all my reviews
You Am I are a band that is very popular down here in Australia. Tim Rogers, who is the backbone of the band is an undeniably talented songwriter, with the ability to combine classic rock 'n roll elements and melodic ballads seemlessly. #4 Record is my favourite album by You Am I...it contains many favourites that have almost reached folk status in Australia such as "Heavy Heart" and "Rumble" just to name a few. I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Australia loves 'em so why the heck don't we?, September 17, 1999
By A Customer
I've been listening to You Am I's '#4 Record' regularly for over 6 months now, and I still believe it's one of the finest pop releases in a long long while. It's smart, hooky and there's some backbone in there too. While the rhythm section is tight and bouncy, Tim Rogers' fine guitar playing is complemented by his ever expanding vocal outputs. This one contains sounds reminiscent of everyone from early Stones to The Jam, but be sure not to miss their last couple either ('Hourly, Daily' and 'Hi Fi Way'), which sadly lack decent distribution in the States.

And this recording certainly does not tell the whole story. If you see these guys live, they just might blow your mind with one of their wildly energetic performances. It is time for America to enjoy what is already recognized by the masses in Australia..... You Am I is the band of the decade, dang it!
