Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Musta is the Finnish word for "black," and there are some dark moods on this solo album by one of Hedningarna's singers. Kurki-Suonio injects the feel of ancient folk to the music, and her voice echoes with snowfields and pine trees--at times she sounds eerily witchy. But it's the mix of acoustic instruments with electronics that sets this record apart--beats, loops, and ambience combine with kantele or accordion to offer a new hybrid for the future. "The Cloud Maiden," epic in spirit, is the perfect example of Kurki-Suonio's style, a journey of sound--and space. As good as so much of the new Scandinavian music has been, Musta raises the standard. --Chris Nickson

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent blend of folk and modern music, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
Wonderful blend going from the traditional and voice centered folk songs to the dance-club beat of "Exercation". Her lyrics are refreshingly thought out - sometimes pensive, sometimes joyful. She has a mature voice which she wields comfortably. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Fusion Between Tradition and Modern Music, August 12, 2000
When people have heard about Finnish music, then it is mainly Varttina; there are however many other sides to Finnish music. Sanna is just one example of the rich musical tradition of the Finnish people. She manages to combine tradition with a distinctively modern sound, without becoming too tacky. Her voice is very suited for the choice of the songs on this album. You still get some very "traditional" pieces, like the slow "Vaskilintu" (The Bronze Bird), and "ambient" songs like "Tuulen Nostatus" (Raising the Wind) and Pilven Tytto (The Cloud Maiden), but also songs with "dance" beats to them like "Manaus" and my favourite "Ei Musta" (Not a Dark One). All in all a very rounded effort which manages to offer variety to prevent you, the listener, from being bored.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate Bush lovers must!, March 14, 2004
By Carl Johnson "budbear_5000" (Detroit, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Musta is an excellent collection of traditional folk crossed with modern arrangements and vocalizations. I am not familiar with the band Hedningarna so I do not have a preconceived expectation of how this "should" sound. I DO think it is original and gusty. I have found that its avant-garde nature has grown on me and I come back to the record often.

I mention Kate Bush in the title bar because the singer reminds me of when I first heard K Bush and my initial impressions of her. She had an infectious shrieking ness to her voice that I found very appealing. The album Musta, had a similar effect on me. Excellent spin!

Sanna, former Finnish female vocalist for Hedningarna, has done great work with this album. It is profoundly emotional, very uplifting, & funky. Read more
