Hot flare-ups in the cold war take center stage in this video documenting how guerrilla warfare related to Communism raged in Cuba, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Newsreel footage of a young and charismatic Fidel Castro explaining his tactics leads to scenes of his takeover of Havana at the end of 1958. His comrade Che Guevara is shown seeking to export revolution via guerrilla war in South America, only to be hunted down and executed. The guerrilla conflict of three decades in Vietnam is also shown via newsreel footage, and in interviews with participants. Colonel David Hackworth recalls how booby traps and other guerrilla tactics were so effective that some American units suffered great casualties while never actually seeing enemy troops. The turning point of the war, the Tet offensive of early 1968, is used as an example of how guerrilla tactics decisively turned public opinion in America against the war. In a reverse scenario, a war in which the guerrillas were anti-Communists, the long and costly struggle following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is documented through startling films of ambushes and in interviews with battle-weary veterans of the Red Army. This video provides fascinating documentation of how small but fanatical guerrilla forces were able to drag the superpowers of the cold war into quagmires in which standard military forces were rendered incapable of achieving victory. --Robert J. McNamara

5.0 out of 5 stars Images of hope., December 30, 2000
By John McCormack (Mahopac, NY United States) - See all my reviews
Now-a-days it may be hard to fathom, but their was a time when people got fed up with being 'governed' and wanted to gain greater freedom. They took on Goverment and sometimes they actually won. Great video, great reminder of the importance of fighting for what you believe in , even if it means losing everything you have, because without basic freedom life is not liveable. For a more in depth look at reveloution and guerilla tactics check out " El Che " .
