5.0 out of 5 stars I can't get enough!, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
On a recent trip to Brasil, I bought "Voce e Eu" after hearing another of Banda Eva's cd's, "Ao Vivo." "Voce e Eu" has become the only cd that plays on my radio, and Ivete Sangalo has topped several american singers to become my new favorite. The songs have a variety of styles, from the upbeat "Carro Velho" to the more romantic "Frisson." Banda Eva has extended it's reach beyond "musica bahaina" to include some samba and other catchy beats. This cd is a great buy, and it has even helped me to improve my portuguese!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ivete, Você E Eu!, March 24, 2004
Banda Eva's front singer Ivete Sangalo has a voice that is stronger than the strongest love potion. What can I say, I am in love with her just for the voice alone. I would love to have her sing me a lullaby every night. "Você E Eu" (You and me) is Ivete's last CD with the group Banda Eva. This is well done beautifully crafted Axé(1) album. The songs range from a fast pace carnival style to mid-tempo seductive groove numbers.

The most popular and most radio played song on this CD is 'Carro Velho' (Old Car). The rhythms on this song are a fast heart-pounding beat that was no doubt a carnival hit when it came out. One can almost feel themselves in the mist of thousand of carnival spectators jumping up and down in the streets of Bahia to this song. 'Coração De Timbaleiro' (heart of the timbau player) follows a very similar style with polyrhythms of the percussion section. Very lively and very upbeat.

'Dlgubelo,' 'Ói Eu, Véia,' and 'Eparrê Baba' could easily fit into the carnival line up. These three songs are fun dance tunes but seem to lack that 'something' compared to 'Carro Velho' or Coração De Timbaleiro.' To me the melodies are not as strong or memorable.

I just love the song 'Eva, Você E Eu' (Eva, You and me). This mid-tempo song has a groove that you just could just listen to in a hammock sipping a caipirinha (Brazil's version of a margarita) under a palm tree watching the sun set over the ocean.

Another beautiful song to drink your caipirhinha to is 'De Ladinho.' The precussion is set to a mid-tempo samba-reggae cadence. Ivete's voice just flows with the syncopated rhythms reflecting off the tropical ocean swells.

'Fã' and 'Frisson' are closer to MPB/Bossa Nova(2) than to the axé music of Bahia. These are beautiful songs. They are slower than their axé contemporaries. As good as these songs are they just do not seem to fit on this CD which is over all axé music. The sudden change in genre in my opinion doesn't seem to flow.

I like the tropical feel of axé and Banda Eva captures the images of tropical settings relieving the stress behind as you sway, tap your foot, or dance to the music. Even though Ivete left the group, Banda Eva has replaced her with a new singer and produced another CD "Expirementa" as of this review. Ivete has continue her career as a solo artist to record three other CD's "Ivete Sangalo," "Beat Beleza," and "Festa." The first two carry on with baiana music and are very similar and as good as this CD "Eva, Você E Eu." The last album she recorded "Festa" is a departure from axé and is more pop/rock. Other pop-axé groups that are worth listening too if you enjoy this CD are Cheiro De Amor, As Meninas, Netinho, and Chiclete Com Banana.

1) Axé music from bahia (see my review of "Dance Bahia" for more information on the genre).
2) MPB a genre of Brazilian Pop Music and Bossa Nova is Brazil's version of latin jazz.
