Soft-rock troubadour Dan Fogelberg fills a transitory slot in the singer-songwriter food chain, a satisfying stopover for those ready to graduate from the pure schmaltz of Barry Manilow but not quite prepared to jump up to the pseudo-deep lyricism of Jackson Browne. Fogelberg's efforts to be "artistic" are overtly transparent, but equally obvious is his gift for melodic songwriting and harmonic arrangements, particularly those that stress the tender touch of his high-pitched voice. It's no surprise, then, that most of Greatest Hits is ballads, most notably "Longer," "Leader of the Band," and "Same Old Lang Syne," though he tosses in "The Power of Gold" in a failed attempt to show he can rock out, too. --Peter Blackstock

This is one of Dan's greatest releases! The entire CD shows how well Dan Fogelburg can sing different kinds of music. From "Part of the Plan", "Longer", and "Make Love Stay" you hear how wonderfully talented Fogelburg is. I would recommend to anyone, who is listening to Fogelburg for the first time, to listen to this CD and get Dan at his very best.

In my opinion, if you are a new to Dan Fogelberg's music you will find "Greatest Hits" a very enjoyable sample of some of his best work. Even though I have every album I bought this one when it came out to keep my collection complete and to play when I want to enjoy the selections on only one cd. I highly recommend his more recent works such as "River of Souls" and his second udertaking with Tim Weisburg, "No Resemblence Whatsoever",as a couple mof my personal favorites. How ever it is diffcultfor me to choose a favorite because I love everything this genius records! So ..Listen to all of it and you will surely be enlighted by the lyrics and taken away by the music. Dan Fogelberg has been releasing wonderful albums for almost 30 years now, and this collection of "greatest hits" dates back to 1982, i.e. it only spans the first ten years of his extraordinary career. I highly recommend you get the 4-CD boxset "Portrait" instead - which includes all of the songs on the album (in some cases remixed or in even better live versions). "Greatest Hits" is a wonderful introduction to the timeless music of Dan Fogelberg and will leave you wanting for more, so go for the "big" Portrait collection straight away.
