Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Born in 1895 in Rio de Pinar, Maria Teresa Vera grew up in a Cuba rich in songs born of beauty and conflict. That she became a professional singer was at first an effrontery to the male-dominated music business at the time; that she became a sensation is a tribute to a talent that is now legendary in her country. In the years that she sang and wrote songs, she became famous, made a wealth of recordings, led her own band, and championed the country music of the street troubadour in the years before the son swept the nation. This album is a tribute to her. The 15 performances, by singers from Spain and Cuba, show the power of the songs themselves, songs she wrote or made famous during her career, songs that forged this generation of singers and writers. They include the polished contemporary folk-pop of Gema Corredera and Maria Salgado, whose warm performance of Vera's signature song "Viente Años" is wonderful. A more country feel comes from Caridad and Reinaldo Hierrezuel's take on Manuel Corona's humorous death tribute "Los Funerales de Papa Mantero." Other near-perfect tracks include Galician diva Uxia's "Perdona Corazon," and the heart-rending warmth of Pablo Guerrero's "Doble Inconsciencia." Pablo Milanes, one of the vanguard of the nueva trova movement in Cuba, calls Maria Teresa Vera "the embodiment of Cuban song." These performances prove it. --Louis Gibson

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment., August 18, 2004
By KP "KP" (Miami, FL United States) - See all my reviews
I love Cuban music. I have hundreds of recordings, thousands of songs. I am writing this not for the casual listener who thinks of this as "world music", but for the dedicated one who can appreciate a bolero and who might be temped by this album.

Most of the interpretations on this CD stilted and loungy.

Rifa strays into the ugliness that is "salsa." Uxia's renditions are particularly atrocious, but she's not alone. At best, the majority of tracks are forgettable mediocrities.
Most of the artists on this CD are not fit to interpret this music.

Funerales para Papa Montero is very good, but then Cariada Hierrezuelo is a legend in her own right. If only she would have done the entire album...

Even the song translations are poor and change the meaning of the original.

Do yourself a favor and listen to Maria Teresa, as this "tribute" does no homage to her genius. If you want a superb sampling of real trova by actual trova artist, not imitations, try Casa de la Trova (ASIN B00000J26Y).

MARIA TERESA VERA IS ONE OF THE BEST CUBAN WRITERS AND SINGERS OF HER OWN TIME. LUCKY ARE THOSE WHO HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HER.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not think of a better Tribute!, July 26, 2001

Whether you knew this Master of popular Cuban music or not, if you have not listened to this antholgy, you owe it to yourself. The artists reponsible for the project are of first caliber and I still have to find a cut I did not like. Based on the compositions that made her take the whole island under her spell, A MARIA TERESA VERA is full of exquisite, modern arrangements, wounderfully orchestraded . The guitar, the instrument of the "trovadores" and Marķa Teresa's eternal companion, serves as the idoneous vehicle for achieving the perfection that characterizes the whole rendition. Highly recommended!
