Editorial Reviews

Glow International, May l997

...this album pulsates with unguarded truth and nakedness. (DeMatteis) instills the work with the phoenixed magic of a caged musician set free before the sun and sky of his Beloved. ...the music weaves and rises through Who-ish flourishes, Beatlesesque harmonies, and the distinct brilliance of a gifted musician, singer, and songwriter.

Product Description

Although he's been a professional writer for more than two decades, the written word is only one of the creative outlets John Marc DeMatteis has chosen to express himself. A longtime devotee of the great Indian spiritual leader, Avatar Meher Baba, DeMatteis has been regularly chronicling his relationship with his Master in song. How Many Lifetimes? is DeMatteis's first CD of Baba-inspired material: a wide array of songs ranging from gentle acoustic ballads to raw rock and roll and Beatlesque production numbers, all of them reflecting the ups, downs, constant challenges, and ineffable rewards of life on the spiritual path. From the raw pain of "Free" to the towering, multi-tracked intensity of the title cut, How Many Lifetimes? is a powerful, and deeply personal, musical statement.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Man of Infinite talents!, February 28, 2005
I have always known that John Marc DeMatteis was a multi-talented man. He not only writes for the two top comicbook publishers and has many of his own illustrated creations, he has written for TV and movies as well and is a good illustrator and painter. I never imagined he was so musically talented. When I first heard this CD I was awe struck. Being of the same spiritual and musical ilk, there was a lot to relate to. Each song is unique although held together by a common subject. The music and lyrics have something for every taste. The spirituality embodied in this endeavor reaches out to engulf the listener. Although my favorite song is one which deviated from the norm. It is called "Diane" and is a love song about and to his wife. The line "Dreams come true and miracles happen," is a constant reminder to me if I should happen to fall into a minor funk or such. The musicians in the backup band, along with the technicians have produced some of the TIGHTEST arrangements ever. Each note and phrase is perfection. I listen to this music frequently and always find some new thing I'd missed before. It's that kind of work. In my humble opinion, JM is a modern day DaVinci, and akin to George Harrison in his choice of expression. Ahead of his time and a credit to any artistic masterpiece he creates. I recommend this album to anyone who has had an awakening or wants a catalist to have one now. (That means YOU!) I guess you can tell I LOVE this disk'!
NAMASTE (I salute the Divinity within you.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Two ears up!!!!, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
What a collection of music. To use the rest of the 1000 words still wouldn't do justice. Not since the days of the generally unknown band Brooklyn, have I been able to hear JM's music. A real treat!
