I bought this in a used CD store because the price was right and it seemed like an interesting curiosity. The only name I knew was that of the conductor, Keilberth. His intro to the drama makes you sit up; the sound is crisp and the direction focused, determined. The next surprise is the Heldentenor, Karl Hauss; an expressive tenor with a powerful middle range that one does not hear today. And when Turandot finally makes her appearance, the audience is slain even when the tenor is not; for this is Maria Cebotari, one of the greatest singers in the Mozart-Strauss tradition--German bel canto. With only one mistake--the sound engineers decided to give a hand to the tenor, Hauss, by spotlighting his "Nessun dorma" (or "Keiner schlafe") when clearly he didn't need it, and the sound overloads--this is a beautiful recording, with all the elements crystal-clear; and the interpretation is unbeatable. The set is filled out with excerpts (on the first CD, before Turandot begins) with excerpts of Puccini's "La Boheme" sung by Cebotari and Peter Anders. This has become one of my go-to opera sets. If you're a fan of historical recordings, and if the price is still right, snap this one up.
