From Jazziz
If every tune here could be as brisk, vibrant, and zippy as the cover of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin" - fashioned as a Wes Montgomery tribute - Cosmic Rhythm would be an intense and joyous electric-guitar experience. The tune speeds by on the wings of Kawasaki's mind-boggling improvisations and melody lines. It's punched up even more by brief and dazzling solos courtesy of keyboardist David Kikoski (on Fender Rhodes) and fusion bassist Lincoln Goines.
Unfortunately, the rest of the album isn't as exciting. Nothing is wrong with Kawasaki's original material, which finds him either dashing or meditating over acid-jazz grooves, but eight out of the 11 songs focus primarily on vocalist Clare Foster. Foster has a kindly voice, sounding much like Swing Out Sister's Corrine Drewery, and a few of her performances are solid. But too many of the vocal tracks come off as uninspired and without much impact. Mainly, she sings pleasant but clich_d lyrics that distract from Kawasaki's powerful lead voice. Atleast the disc ends on a highnote: "Soul Behind the Mirror." It's a tribute to Gil Evans that features distant synth-muted trumpet calls. It's moody and atmospheric and truely inspired.
