Dave Whitehill - Guitarist/SongwriterTranscriptionist for Hal Leonard Publishing, Formerly Transcribed for Guitar Magazine
" ... Mr. Bax's debut LP is an eclectic mix of funk, R&B, jazz & pop that showcases his exceptional compositional and vocal talents. The production values are higher than I usually hear on an artist's first effort. The arrangements are first class and feature some really fine ensemble work. The soloists shine too. Andy Timmons plays some burning riffs on the funky "Rolling Off My Tongue" that satisfied my jones for Steely Dan style guitar solos ala Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, et al. Daran DeShazo plays some tasty licks, filling up the cracks on "Cracks In The Sidewalk". Alfonso's vocals are particularly strong on this song and are propelled along by modulations in key, a compositional device that is overlooked by the majority of today's songwriters. His forte is fusion tinged blues and ballads. A good example in the blues vein is "Give Up Baby", which features mysterious minor modalities setting the mood. Creative chording and a bridge section keeps the proceed! ings from being locked away in the confines of traditional blues. The guitar on this cut compliments Alfonso's passionate vocal. Introspective lyrics, excellent musicianship and powerful vocals are the icing on Alfonso's compositional cake, one that's not too sweat (i.e. too pop-ish) or too elaborately decorated (i.e. too jazzy). I want another helping."
