5.0 out of 5 stars Testosterone Rock with a surprising amount of diversity!!!!, March 13, 2002
By chris jennings (Florida, the best of the u.s.) - See all my reviews
This is one rockin' album!! But, it also shows how much the band had grown. When I listen to previous albums by them, I am not impressed-Every song is very simple, and the nursery rhyme lyrics are very interchangeable. I thought they were ok, if I needed a shot of ... rock, but I would have never bought an album of theirs.A friend played me this in March of 91-just when it was released, right in the middle of the alternative phase-in/ Hairbands phase-out period, and I was surprised how diverse it was. There were the typical straight-forward rockers like Desert Moon, cant shake it,etc.,but there was also stuff like South Bay Cities,Lovin Kind, and afterglow. This is truly fine songwriting-previously they just rehashed Chuck Berry riffs, and it was boring, but songs like Lovin Kind are not derivative of anything. The piano playing, and the move towards more acoustic guitars proved they were getting better.South Bay Cities is unbelievably bright and refreshing. They were no longer masked through the overproduction period of the 80's-much cleaner recording. They finally separated themselves from the countless bands who sounded exactly like each other. They were showing the diversity that Led Zeppelin did on albums like Houses and In Through The Out Door(Great White's heroes). I was so sick of all the hair bands of the time, so I really wanted to hate this!!!I just couldnt- it rocked with as much diversity as Dirty Deeds by ac/dc It seemed a shame that these kind of bands were becoming passe' just when they were getting good!!( I actually prefer newer albums by them, and Slaughter, and Cinderella, but dont like these bands most popular older stuff)Too bad the only hit off this was Call it rocknroll, because that was one of the worst songs. The lyrics were only slightly better, but anything was an improvement..I also recommend Sail Away-it is not a heavy cd,but has some strong mid-tempo rockers like Livin in the USA, Momma dont stop, and all right.Music has gotten so much worse in the past 15 years, that I dont think this playful/ballsy kind of rock and roll will ever make a come back-the closest is Lenny Kravitz. Today's music is so much different, dont expect another album in the future to rock this well with as much diversity!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A "MUST HAVE" GREAT WHITE LP!!!, April 26, 2004
This was the finest studio LP that Great White released during the last decade of the 20th Century! From start to finish, this is a collection of superb songs that will take you back to a time when good friends, good women, and parties of monumental proportions were springing up from coast to coast. And Great White was there, to put us all in the mood for some late night love, or help us move on from another broken heart.
I was ready to head out for those "South Bay Cities" many a time while listening to this album. This is some of the best Rock Music that can be found anywhere. "HOOKED" is a masterpiece! If you like what you have heard from Great White, you will absolutely love the "HOOKED" LP. Buy it today!
