Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Similar in scope to Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, which captures the inaugural tour, the 1998 festival is presented on volumes 2 and 3, with each disc available separately this time around. Volume 2 offers a large dose of the folksy acoustic fare we've come to associate with VH-1 (i.e., Natalie Merchant, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin), with a side helping of angry-young-woman rock (Tracy Bonham, Sinead O'Connor, Holly McNarland) and an assortment of other performers. While wholly enjoyable, the standouts are Queen Latifah's diva-style dish on "Life," O'Connor's impassioned "Fire of Babylon," Angelique Kidjo's West African pop tune "Never Know," and Emmylou Harris's duet with Sarah McLachlan on "Angel," which transports the Surfacing hit to realms heretofore unrealized. --Paige La Grone

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good CD, May 24, 1999
By A Customer
This CD is pretty good. Unlike the first volume, the range of music here stretches slightly beyond the usual folky accoustic types. You see some African (Angelique Kidjo), some rap (Queen Latifah), some trip-hop (Morcheeba) and some alternative rock (Tracy Bonham/Holly McNarland/Wild Strawberries) as well as some ethereal-type music(Sinead O/SarahMc/Emmylou)

My personal favourites are Sinead O's "Fire on Babylon", Angelique K's "Never Know", Queen Latifah's "Life", Morcheeba's "The Sea", Bic Runga's "Sway", Holly Mc's "Elmo" and (my most favourite of all) SarahMc/Emmylou's duet "Angel". WOW! That song had me gaping in wonder. Sarah and Emmylou's melodic vocals beautifully melding together on such a beautiful song creates one thing ; BREATHTAKING MAGIC. Sarah's playing Delibes' Flower Duet at the beginning makes it even more magical.

If you're sick of hearing all those boybands/teen implants (aka Britney Spears)/wailing divas as well as other pop radio stuff) AND you really wanna hear some good quality music, this CD may be your welcome respite. Don't just listen to the samples ; not only do they make the songs sound awful, they also don't reflect the songs in their entirety.

Why the four-star treatment ? Well, I wish there are more artist collaborations like Sarah/Emmylou 's "Angel". Without the collaborations, history will not be able to see that special spirit that makes Lilith Fair. And where are some of the vital artists that appeared on last years tour ; Lauryn Hill, Lucinda Williams..?

To Nettwerk Productions and Arista Records ; PLEASE release the collaborations CD as you had originally planned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD just to hear ANGEL, January 28, 2000
By Donna (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
OK I HAVE GONE TO HEAVEN! HEARING SARAH AND EMMYLOU SING ANGEL TOGETHER IS WORTH EVERY PENNY YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS CD! EMMYLOU HARRIS CAN SING WITH ANYBODY AND SOUND GOOD, AND ANGEL IS ONE THE BEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN! THE OTHER TRACKS ARE OK, BUT ANGEL BLOWS ALL THE OTHER SONGS AWAY! THE HARMONIES ARE AMAZING! YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU SARAH !!!!, May 18, 1999
By Durice@aol.com (CLEVELAND, OHIO) - See all my reviews
Thank you Sarah for exposing the public to artists that otherwise would go unknown. It is worth buying the C.D. for "Angel" alone. How do you make a great song even better ? Oh I don't know add Emmylou Harris. People, this lady is a national treasure who has never gotten her props because the so called radio and record excutives have either labeled her or haven't labled her properly. Do yourself and your ears a favor, after buying this C.D. and Vol.III of Lilith Fair, start your Emmylou collection. Give her the support and love that she greatly deserves !!!

2.0 out of 5 stars listenable but not really worth the money

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best "Sampler"
This is my favorite CD of 2000. If you like female vocalists (Sarah) this is a must have. Worth it just for Bic Runga's "Sway" not to mention all the other great songs.
