Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
On their 1997 release, Dude Ranch, juvenile hardcore-pop band Blink 182 tickled the funny bone with an assortment of dumb sex jokes, off-color artwork, and between-song skits, including one of a dog drinking from a freshly peed in toilet. So, two years down the road, have the band matured at all? One look at the cover of Enema of the State, which features cover art of a tarted-up blonde nurse donning a rubber glove, provides the easy answer. Fortunately, Enema supports the humor with strong musicianship. The songs are more dynamic and multitempoed than those on Dude Ranch, sounding like a cross between the Descendents and Fountains of Wayne. And unlike the glut of alt-rock releases that offer one or two memorable songs, Enema is flush with instantly memorable melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies. Good, dirty fun--no more, no less. --Jon Wiederhorn

5.0 out of 5 stars The best CD in the punk rock catagory, May 24, 2000
By Darlene McBride (Georgetown, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This is by far the best CD that I have ever owned. Blink 182 not only delivers an outstanding performance but a hilarious one as well. Enema of the State is ideal for punk rock or even alternative fans.

Dumpweed - Doesn't make a lot of sense, but has a foot-tapping rythm that's real easy to get into.

Don't Leave Me - Pleasant, annoying tune that no one would mind your singing it out loud.

Aliens Exist - This song is one of my favorites-it has a real punk beat with brilliant lyrics that have that funny, immature Tom DeLonge ring to them.

Going Away to College - captures the uncertainty and intimidatingness of getting out into the real world-plus it has some awsome tunes.

What's My Age Again? - Exceptional guitar-playing and extremely funny and absurd words that you would expect from a fifteen-year-old adolescent.

Dysentary Gary - Puts a spiteful breakup into a fabulous song.

Adam's Song - Widely popular and for a good reason. Its one of the only songs on this album that forgets immaturity and goes to a deeper point of troubled teenager's view.

All the Small Things - Annoying tune that you don't mind getting under your skin.

The Party Song - Fast paced, rap-style song that speeds up and slows down while it leaves your tongue tied.

Mutt - My second favorite song on this album-Tom DeLonge really knows how to croon a story about a shallow, mislead couple.

Wendy Clear - Not one of the funniest or most popular, but Mark Hoppus's vocals make up for it.

Anthem - Awsome display of raw talent by drummer Travis Barker as he serves up an impressive beat in this rebellious song of misfits and outcasts.

A must-have addition to any punk rock fan's collection. If you like anything remotely close to Blink 182, then you'll love this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very solid blink album, July 16, 2006
Enema of the State is blink-182's breakthrough 1999 album. It defitlnly put them into heavy mainstream and boosted their populatarity alot. This album is very fun loving and funny and shows a side of mark and tom that is not showed these days. I really enjoy this album because all the music flows and the band were acctually good friends back then. Also the instrumental has improved since some of their earlier albums.
Enema of the state combines catchy pop guitar licks with the soothing voice of mark and the edgy more rough voice of tom and the talented but repeated drum beats of Travis Barker.
Here is the track listing.

1.Dumpweed : A great starting song. As soon as you put on the cd .. BAM theres a blistering note that leads to a catchy lick and follows through with a fast pull-off riff. the chorus is strong and the songs all good. I would rate it as an 10/10.

2.Dont Leave me : a song about not wanting to be left alone. Not much to the instrument but very catchy and a clasisc pop tune. 8/10.

3.Aliens Exist : This songs pretty great . The lyrics acctually make sense and there a point to the song. 7.5/10.

4.Going away to collage : this song is really aweosme. It kind of represents the whole blink-182 sound. it starts clean and follows through with a very simple but thoughtfull guitar riff. Marks voice sounds very clean and smooth but still provides the right feel for the song. The lyrics are kind of sad but the tune is happy and upbeat. 8.5/10.

5. Whats my age again: One of the biggest hit songs on the album. The lyrics are pretty funny. And the instrumental is moderalty challenging complared to other songs. Its about being immiture and getting dumped over but frankly not caring too much. Also the video features the guys running through LA naked. Its sweet.7.5/10.

6.Dysentary Gary : Flippin sweet song!! its starts out with a poppy fast paised lick and mark and toms voice flow very well together . The chorus is steady and very complete. And the bridges are clean and realy cool to lisitn to. Its pretty much about girls being bitches and friends being idiots. 10/10.

7. Adams song : its about suicide. its a more serious song on the album. I like it becuase its a change and fun to play on guitar. It has a nice dark , deep feel to it . 8/10.

8.All the Small things: its probably the most memorable song of blinks but i think its the gayest song on the album. Thats all i have to say. 6/10.

9. The party song : Well its a bout a PARTY!!!!!but its also about finding out about what parties are all about. its a killer song very fast paced and the lyrics are guioness and funny too.
The only problem is the verse doesnt have a very good tune. But the chorus delivers very well. 7/10.

10. Mutt: Featured on the american pie soundtrack. Aweomse song. Bass and drums intro and then the guitar comes in. Its about a couple who are basically sex hounds and its unnecesserary. the lyrics are great. The tune is great. 8/10.

11.Wendy Clear: Defitnly a great song. Marks voice sounds amazing on the verse. And the song has a great feel to it. I dont understand the lyrics but i dont pay attention to them on this song. The harmony on the voice really makes this song effective and catchy. 10/10.

12. Anthem : Great lyircs. Neat Guitar. And Amzing hi hat work by Travis. Its a teenage anthem aboujt hating parents , playing with a band, and what not. 9/10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute pop-punk classic, September 24, 2006
A Kid's Review
1999 was a crazy year. Everyone was getting prepared for Y2K. Everyone was out seeing Star Wars Episode 1, Toy Story 2, and The Sixth Sense. It was a year of popstars (Britney Spears, N*SYNC, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys) and rap-rockers (KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock), but among them came a little punk trio of guys in their mid-20's singing teen anthems along to simple, catchy, energetic music that would inspire hit music for years to come. That band was blink-182, the band that created tons of hits, inspired millions of teens to start bands, and popularized the term "pop-punk", and it all happened with this album.

Enema of The State is now considered a rock classic. From beginning to end, its one of the catchiest, most energetic, melodic, and loudest records ever. The lyrics range from hilarious (The Party Song) to heartfelt (Going Away To College), to a combination of both (Anthem).

Tom's powerchords are the loudest and crunchiest I've ever heard on a pop album, and his lead riffs are some of the simplelest but catchiest I've ever heard, and come on- what kid starting to learn guitar nowadays doesn't try to learn Adam's Song? Vocally his bratty voice fits songs perfect with him taking over the vocals on songs such as Dumpweed, Aliens Exist, Dysentary Gary, All The Small Things, Mutt, and Anthem. Mark plays bass very simply, but his tone is very clean and complements guitar and drums very well. His fills in the bridge of What's My Age Again? are perfect as well. Vocally Mark has a cleaner voice than Tom, which works well on the songs he sings- Don't Leave Me, Going Away To College, What's My Age Again, Adam's Song, The Party Song, and Wendy Clear. That brings us to Travis- but what hasn't been said about this guy already? He's f-ing amazing! His beats are incredibly fast and his fills are timed and calculated spot on. He's definetly got to be one of the greatest drummers of all time.

This record is just a straight up classic. Look at so many of the popular rock bands that emerged in the 2000's- Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco... Would any of these bands have been able to achieve so much popularity if blink hadn't kicked the doors of pop-punk wide open? I think not. So whether your just chilling in your room, going on a road trip, or having a pool party- throw this record on and rock out, because it's perfect.
