Product Description

Editorial Review
In an ironic twist, one of the coolest, most action-packed auto racing games in eons stars one of the world's most sluggish cars. But racers will never sense a lack of speed in Beetle Adventure Racing as they zip, jump, and fall around some of the most original and beautiful tracks seen on the Nintendo 64.

The uniqueness of this game lies in the beautiful graphics and rampant, humorous action (à la San Francisco Rush). On a Tiki-themed island track, for instance, racers are startled by a roaring T-Rex (clearly a nod to Jurassic Park), and risk a molten demise as the road passes alongside rivers of realistically rendered lava. With unusually long tracks, vertigo-inducing jumps and falls, tons (and tons) of hidden areas and shortcuts, breakable obstacles, and well-placed power-ups, this is a game that just keeps getting better with each play.

Solo racers are pitted against seven other cars in a single race or championship mode, duel against one other computer car, or race against the clock. Multiplayer variations include head-to-head racing for up to four racers, and a Beetle Battle that could easily be its own game cartridge. In this Mario Kart-style mode, racers are armed with mines, rockets, magnets, and shield power-ups that impede the progress of fellow racers attempting to collect a variety of ladybug icons. Those looking for a long-lived gaming experience can't go wrong with this one. --Eric Twelker

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics rival many arcade racing games
  • Enormously fun driving action, long, well-designed tracks, many shortcuts and hidden areas
  • Excellent car physics
Cons:
  • No single-player Beetle Battle mode

GameSpot Review
With driving games getting all serious these days, it's nice to see a racer focusing on fun rather than realism. EA's Beetle Adventure Racing shouldn't even be thought of as being within the same genre as games like Sony's Gran Turismo or Sega's Sega Rally 2, as it really belongs more to the crazy racing offshoot pioneered by Midway's San Francisco Rush.

That, of course, means Beetle Adventure Racing is rife with shortcuts and jumps, but the physics are more down to earth than its San Francisco cousin, making you feel much more in control of the car. Taking a cue from the N64 version of San Francisco Rush, the game has numbered boxes scattered across its tracks. If you collect all these boxes, they open up cheats and other extras in BAR's GoldenEye 007-style cheat menu. Beyond that, you can earn new tracks and cars by coming in first in the championship mode, and you can practice both in the single-race option. What Paradigm accomplished visually with BAR was impressive, especially considering it didn't use the RAM Pak for an additional boost. Helicopters and creatures pop out of the environments, the framerate maintains an excellent speed throughout (it's less apparent at first, since you begin with slower cars), and the weather and lighting effects are superb. For example, the final stretch of the second track re-creates the look of driving up a mountain road during a gorgeous Colorado morning. The only real complaint that can be aimed at the visuals is that there are a few instances of pop-up in some of the tracks. They're pretty rare, but they occur just enough to rob the graphics of an even higher score.

There are also a few imperfections at work on the game's multiplayer side, but these don't ruin the game in the least. The Beetle battle mode, wherein two to four players try to gather six differently colored beetle icons and escape first, just misses its mark. The arenas are often so large so that you begin playing more by watching your radar than the actual screen. They're not badly designed, but they make you wish for the simply constructed and compact "deathmatch" levels of Mario Kart 64. Meanwhile, the two-player race option is weak since there are no computer-controlled opponents to compete against. Since it's not the only multiplayer mode in the game, it's not horribly important, but it does contribute to keeping the game from being well rounded.

Beetle Adventure Racing really shines in its single-player mode. Even without the appeal of letting you find each of the track's shortcuts and collect all the boxes to open up the game's secrets, the basic racing model is quite sound. The tracks are well made, and the gameplay is challenging to the point where you'll begin memorizing where you want to be on the other side of the turn to ensure getting that extra turbo-boost (something I haven't felt compelled to do since WipeOut XL). Having the shortcuts and other extras on top of this all is just cake.

To bring it down to brass tacks, Beetle Adventure Racing is a great deal of fun. It's an excellent game, whatever genre or sub-genre you try to classify it in, and its flaws don't drag it down nearly as much as they might sound. This game is not to be missed, highly recommended, and so on. --Joe Fielder

If you are a fan of racing games, then Beetle Adventure Racing is for you. With it's addictive gameplay and fun multiplayer, Beetle Adventure Racing is the way to go. There are plenty of shortcuts to take to speed ahead of you opponent. Make sure you have a memory card for this game so you can save your hard work.

Once you beat a difficulty level in champianship mode, you will get more cars. Ones that go way faster and have better handling and acceleration.

Beetle Adventure Racing is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars BAR Rox!, February 28, 2000

Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is definetly the best racing game on the N64.It is a mix of Goldeneye(Beetle Battle) And maybe San Francisco Rush. The grphics match up with Gran Turismo for the Playstation. You have to admit, racing 7 other computer players, all driving beautifully colored beetles, it pure fun. The tracks are beautiful, and on "Inferno Isle," when you are in the jungle part, a Tyrannosauros Rex jerks its head out of the trees and roars at you. The first time it happens, some people fall down, because it comes totally unexpected. You even get a beetle that changes color as you race. If you totall beat the game, you get a police beetle, that can make other cars pull over. There is even a cheat menu. Pros:great graphics, gameplay, and cars.Huge world to race in, will take a while to get everything. CONS:Final tracks can be very hard to beat. You have to race a lot to get all the cars. Needs memory card. If you liked Goldeneye, San Francisco Rush, and Star Wars:Episode 1 Racer, then you'll love this game. I have 8 words: STOP READING NOW AND GO GET THIS GAME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect blend of cartoon and realism racers, December 23, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Beetle Adventure Racing is a superb game. The gameplay is easy to get used to, and the tracks really transcend the normal idea of a racing track and move more towards being a world. While there are only 6 tracks, the depth of them with all the shortcuts and breakables really eliminate boredom factors.

In addition to that great single player mode, multiplayer mode is a lot of fun too. While blowing up friends a la MarioKart's battle mode is fun, Beetle Adventure Racing really adds a brilliant feature by adding small beetle icons that appear in the arena in pre-determined places. Only one beetle icon is in the arena at any given time, and when it's picked up, a new one appears. The cool part is that the goal is to pick up 6 different colored beetle icons and the beetle changes color every few seconds. This allows for some real strategy in terms of waiting for the beetle to turn to a color you need while balancing it with fending off your opponent from getting the icon.

There are a few drawbacks to this game, however. My primary beef is with the battle mode arenas. In the single player game there are 100 bonus points on each track and if you collect them all, you get a new multi-player track. Unfortunately, this is not a trivial task, and can get rather tedious. In addition, most of the multi-player tracks I've unlocked are pretty simplistic. One multiplayer track, Stadium, is very good, but it would have been nice to see the others live up to the elaborate landscape that this track and the single-player tracks display.

However, this is a minor drawback, as the single player game is still loads of fun, and the multiplayer game is certainly better than most.
