Product Description

Editorial Review

There's no need to be boggled by words. Boggle Jr. helps children learn letters, spelling, and reading while having loads of fun! This easy version of the terrifically popular adult Boggle uses pictures and matching games to allow children to make the connection between objects and their names. With two skill levels, players can challenge themselves further as they become more adept at identifying letters and words. It will seem like no time at all before kids are begging to play their parents' version of Boggle! The game, for one or more players, includes a game tray with word cover, 30 picture/word cards with 60 three- and four-letter words, and eight letter cubes. --Emilie Coulter

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for developing literacy awareness, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This game was recommended by my daughter's preschool teachers as a supplementary activity to help develop reading skills. I can appreciate its value in helping kids learn their letters, developing sight-reading skills, and even letter-sound correspondence. However, my 4-year-old daughter didn't find having to turn over the blocks repeatedly to find the letters a lot of fun. And a word of warning: some words can NOT be formed, because occasionally two letters needed to form a word are on the same block! I wish Hasbro would do something about this...

5.0 out of 5 stars We all love Boggle Jr.!, April 24, 2003

Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
My 3, 4, and 7 year olds all get good use out of this game in different ways. (Also our 1 year old helps by stacking up the cubes.) I would recommend it to any family with preschoolers up to early second grade (older kids play with the words always covered). My kids have been able to play it by themselves with very little teaching. Other reviewers have complained about Boggle Jr's lack of buzzers, music, timers, and competitiveness, as well as the fact that their kids actually had to look on the cubes for the letter they needed-- these are all plusses if you ask me! This game has promoted concentration and focus in my kids, and the sound of busy, thinking kids emanating from the dining room is far sweeter than electronic noises any day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a "game" at all., November 9, 2002
Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
It was a waste of $$. It's not a game -- it's a headache. There is no element of playful competition in it: you get 8 plastic dice - each letter of the alphabet represented twice, and then you pick a card, put it in the holder which doesn't keep the card upright and proceed to search for the letters which make up the word on one of the 8 cubes and then place it in the groove to spell the three or four letter word.

That's it. That's the "game".

It gets tedious fast. You're much better off to buy yourself a Scrabble game where you have the letters seperated in front of you and make your own word cards and let the kids do the same thing (therefore eleminating the headache and eyestrain of flipping eight dice over and over each time you try to spell out a word); Scrabble accomplishes this perfectly, and when they are 7 and 8 you've got the Scrabble game to play. I returned Boggle Jr immediately. I was mostly disapointed not because it was too basic for my 4 and 5.5 year old, but because it's sold as a 'game' and there is no element of a game within it. No time restraints, no taking turns - and it's not designed for two players no matter what the directions attempt to suggest - it gets boring in a surprisingly short amount of time. I felt I was mislead by the packaging.

Definately skip Boggle Jr and get yourself Scrabble board.
