Product Description

Editorial Review

The Lamaze Soft Sorter gives baby a surprise with every squeeze! Each side of the fabric cube has a different design and a differently shaped opening that matches one of the four shapes. And each fabric shape has a special sound to keep your little one laughing. Baby can reach through the flap on top or an X-shaped opening on the bottom to find his treasures all over again. Baby learns hand-eye coordination in a soft, colorful world full of funny sounds. Everything packs up nice and tidy to take along in a diaper bag or suitcase. The Soft Sorter has earned awards from Dr. Toy, Best Children's Vacation Products, Parents Magazine Top Toys, and Parenting Magazine Toys of the Year. Hand or machine washable and safety tested. Includes infant development guide and lifetime warranty. --Margaret Quinn

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it, but . . ., August 14, 2000
By Cat (Northborough, MA USA) - See all my reviews
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My daughter received this toy as a gift when she was 8 months, and I thought it was terrific. It's bright and colorful; each shape makes a different sound (one is crinkly, one rattles, one squeaks, etc.); and the shape sorter is carefully organized by pattern as well as shape, so that the piece with diagonal lines fits in the hole on the side with a diagonal line pattern, and so on. Alas, it really doesn't work as a shape sorter. Because the shape sorting box is soft, it doesn't retain its form as awkward toddler fingers try to push shapes through the holes. You might say, it fails of its essential purpose. As a result, although my daughter (now 3) played with the shapes from time to time, especially the squeaky one, and sometimes still uses the box to hold other, unrelated objects, she never used it as a shape sorter and in fact, did not play with it often.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully "Forgiving" Shaper Sorter for Young Toddlers, September 4, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Unlike some of the hard, plastic shape sorters on the market, this soft fabric toy offers a lot of "cheating room" for the youngest toddler who is just beginning to grasp the concept of shape sorting. In fact, even before my son was old enough to use the fabric box, he enjoyed playing with and gnawing on the different soft shapes, since each one crinkles, rattles, squeaks, etc. Around ten months, he began filling the box and dumping out the contents through the large, velcro-latched trap door. Weeks later, he began smashing the different shapes (correctly and incorrectly) through the various holes. At this stage, he also would laugh uproariously if we reached in and grabbed his hand as he slipped it through one of the holes. Now, he manages to match up the shapes with the correct slots most of the time. As he gets older, I imagine that we will have to buy him a similar toy with less "forgiving" holes, but this Lamaze toy was a great way to introduce him to the whole idea of shape sorting. I also loved the fact that I could just toss the whole toy into the washing machine when it became grimy (I never dreamed how precious the words "machine washable" would be until I became a mother!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! This is the only sorter my baby plays with., September 12, 1999

Finally a toy my daughter doesn't bonk her head on. Even with out the sorter cube the shapes are fun to play with because each one makes a different sound. The triange is my daughters favorite. It makes a krinkley sound. Bravo.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that great
The real problem? It's soft and any of the shapes can be put through any of the holes. Not teaching a whole lot when that happens. Read more

Looks great, but it seems as if it makes parents happier than kids... our little girl had it around from 3mon to date (15mon), and still shows absolutely no interest.

2.0 out of 5 stars anything but a shape sorter
The shapes do not easily fit through the holes of the sorter. My son played with the shapes themselves a little since each made noise; but other toys do that too. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
My 8 month old isn't too into this toy. He likes the crinkly door that you can open to get the shapes out, but that's about it. Maybe when he's a little older.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun to look at but that's about it
Since it is so soft you can basically force any of the shapes through any of the holes. So, don't expect much educational value from this toy. Read more
