Desert Blue has all the makings of a hipster's delight. The indie-damaged, but heartfelt, bedroom musings of singer-songwriters
Ben Lee and
Cat Power juxtapose nicely with the nascent feminism of vintage tunes by
Nancy Sinatra and
Janis Ian. And the album's standout track, a duet between Nina Persson (
the Cardigans) and Nathan Larson (
Shudder to Think) is a country-laced acoustic ballad of real resonance. But soon enough, the hipness turns hapless as
Desert Blue gets mired in the open-mic-nite-at-the-coffeehouse amateurism of newcomers Rilo Kiley and Bic Runga. Collectively, the songs here don't convey any sense of tone or place that a capable soundtrack should. Instead, they just leave you feeling lucky you aren't as mopey and self-obsessed as the film's music supervisor must be.
