Product Description

Editorial Review
One of the best things about the Game Boy Color is that it's basically an original Nintendo Entertainment System that can fit in your pocket. What this means for gamers is that many of the great games for the classic system are being ported to the Game Boy Color, giving us a chance to re-play (or in some cases discover) the best game titles from the '80s.

Nintendo's own Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is among the first of these conversions, and it certainly remains one of the best. Actually, calling this game a conversion really doesn't do it justice. This version actually contains more levels than the original game, including the entire Japanese version and a slew of extras (such as a two-player mode).

The controls in this game are easy to grasp--even for novice gamers. All Mario can do is jump (and shoot fireballs with the right power- ups), but it is amazing to see how much gameplay can be squeezed from these simple actions when the controls work in direct harmony with a player's thoughts. The only element of this game that could have been better is that the Game Boy Color's screen isn't quite large enough to show the entire layout of the original game screen, so players may occasionally need to press up and down on the control pad to see some offscreen action. While this can be distracting, it ultimately has minimal impact on gameplay. If you are looking for the quintessential side-scrolling platform game, you can't do much better than Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Classic side-scrolling action gameplay
  • Lots of extras
Cons:
  • Screen isn't quite big enough to show the entire layout of the game

Product Description
The classic arcade game comes to the Game Boy Color! In addition to playing Super Mario Brothers, players will also be able to complete special red coin challenges on each level. Also, totally new bonus options are also available, like a calendar feature and special artwork that can be turned into stickers with the Game Boy Printer.

You'll guide Mario through eight worlds packed with flowers and free lives, avoiding koopas and blasting Bowser with fireballs. Warp zones, secret coin rooms, and hidden vines are tucked away behind breakable blocks, which taught gamers back in the early '80s to explore every nook and cranny. Includes two-player competition via a link cable. Available for Game Boy Color only.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars, the first Super Mario Brothers game reborn..., July 11, 2000

This is an excellent adaption of the original game to the Game Boy Color. Now you can play the classic, history-making first game anywhere, even if you don't have a tv or plugg-ins! There are a whole lot of add-ons to this game. First of all, they changed some parts of the game for the better. Then they also added the lost levels of the game that can only be accessed when you reach a specific high score (of which I can't remember). They also have a racing activity with Boo the ghost and a challenge version of the game where finding red coins and Yoshi's eggs are as important as finishing the levels, too. And there's also a "verses" edition, where you can play against one of your friends (or enemies, of course). Whoever adapted this game to the Game Boy Color said "I want this version of the game to be even better," and they did a wonderful job. The graphics even look better! The Game Boy screen is too small to fit the entire layout of the levels onto it at the same time, so you have to look around using the "Up" and "Down" buttons. But that's okay, 'cause that just adds on to the challenge of the game! I only gave this video game 4 1/2 stars because you will still want to see yourself play on the big screen, but I would recommend this version of the classic game to anyone who liked it back in 1985. You'll probobly like this version even better!

I found this to be one of the greatest gameboy games and NES game I ever played. It has tons of new bonuses and 2 hidden games in there. Such a great game and you can always enjoy this as long as you have a gameboy color. Lots of new bonuses that couldn't be on the NES. Its just a great game. If you like mario then buy this game its one of the greatest games ever to be made in existence

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review from a Grown-up Gamer., September 8, 2000
By Elliot Spendhermoney (Connecticut USA) - See all my reviews
Hey, this is the same game I played on the original Nintendo Entertainment System back in the '80s! I played that game for many hours and now I remember why. It's a fun and challenging game. It's not so difficult that it becomes frustrating. And, you get lots of lives and lots of options to continue from the level you last reached. You play Mario or Luigi. They are plumbers, but that's not central to the story unless you consider the many pipes you go into and jump over in the game. Some of the levels are underwater. Some of them are in dungeons. Mario or Luigi defeat their enemies by jumping on top of them. But, many enemies are best avoided. Watch those jumps, though. After death by touching an enemy, falling into the abyss below is the leading cause of Mario fatalities. This is my first Gameboy game, so I can't compare it to other Gameboy titles. Suffice it to say, I bought this game based upon it's good reviews and I am not disappointed. I recommend it highly, especially for people who remember playing the NES in 1985!
