Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Need information on the go? Keep yourself informed and organized with the Philips Nino 210 Personal Companion. This entry-level PDA manages your calendar, business contacts, and to-do list; provides a voice recorder and note taker; and even lets you read e-mail and Web information downloaded from your desktop PC.

Setting up the Nino was easy--we just inserted two AA batteries (included), attached the synchronization cable to the desktop "partner" PC's serial port, dropped in the software CD-ROM and followed the Windows CE installation wizard.

The Nino 210 is comfortable to hold and operate. You navigate through the Nino's core information-management applications with several side-mounted push buttons designed for one-handed operation, or by tapping the stylus on the backlit display.

A Windows CE CD-ROM provides all the necessary software to manage tasks on your desktop PC and synchronize them with the Nino 210.

On the desktop PC, we added a mobile news channel to Microsoft Internet Explorer's list of channels. We easily set the ActiveSync options to update the Nino 210 with the new subscription and we were able to read news stories on the Nino 210 at our leisure.

We also tested the Jot handwriting system. While it took a little bit of time to get accustomed to the software, the system proved to be flexible. The Nino interpreted a full paragraph of handwriting, and we easily and successfully transmitted the text to another Windows CE device through the infrared transceiver.

With its attractive, ergonomic design and its Windows CE operating system, the Nino is a fun and functional entry-level PDA.

Pros:

  • Lots of memory for the price
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Attractive, ergonomic design

Cons:

  • Slightly larger than other PDAs
  • Does not include a 9-to-25 pin serial port adapter

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the product, 1 star for Philips!, December 7, 1999
By A Customer
I was very lucky to get this handy product as a gift. Nino is very impressive. First, no setup is necessary, just take it out from the box and it is ready to be used. I also used the handy Nino-to-PC cable to connect it to my PC. Unlike many other products which require USB, Nino can be connected via regular RS serial port, which is a standard on any system.

Personally, I didn't face problems connecting the port. But some might since serial ports have their own stuff. For example, they must not share the same IRQ. Now the customer service at philips are not smart enough to tell you that. So I guess you should go over your Windows manual and philips manual for troubleshooting.

Nino is very portable, and except the fact that it is thick not to fit in my pocket, I think it is great. I anyway am a college student and carry my bag almost anywhere I would carry my nino. In this case, Nino fits nicely in my bag.
