Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The Xerox DocuPrint P8 laser printer can place up to four pages of information onto one proof sheet. It also prints up to 256 gray shades, has two parallel ports for PC sharing, and offers 250-sheet paper capacity.

The P8's best feature is its simplicity. To set up the printer, we removed the protective shipping tape and padding, unpacked and inserted the included toner cartridge, and connected the AC power. We connected the parallel cable (included) to our PC and inserted the driver software disk when prompted by the Windows setup wizard.

To test the P8, we printed text in a variety of fonts and sizes. All our samples were as laser-perfect as we would expect from a 600-dpi printer, with most fonts looking as if they had been typeset. We also printed color fonts, and the grayscale interpretation seemed reasonable (violet was darker than red, and blue was darker than green). The rated printing speed is eight pages per minute, and we printed eight identical copies in 71 seconds.

We also printed a color photo using the default printer settings (600 dpi, medium halftoning); the printer's 256-grayscale interpretation of the original's colors was warm and smooth with little evidence of dotted halftoning or pixelation. The total printing time for the photo was 35 seconds (20 seconds to transfer the data and process the image, 15 seconds to print it) from the time we clicked the Print button to the time we pulled the paper from the output tray. A second printing of the same image took only 21 seconds.

We also manually changed the printer settings to 300 dpi with medium halftoning and again to 600 dpi with fine halftoning. The former was a bit grainy, and the latter was too dark. Clearly there's no need to override the printer's decisions for most printing tasks.

Overall, we think the P8's performance was very good for its price--this is a nice, little laser printer for general-purpose printing.

Pros:

  • Parallel cable included
  • Quick setup
  • Simple, straightforward design

Cons:

  • No software bundle
  • Drivers on floppy disks, not CD-ROM

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent small printer for those who want laser quality, August 17, 1999
By A Customer
The printer was super easy to set up and begin using. The print quality is comparable to the more expensive and larger laser printers. Also, the toner cartridges last for about 3000 pages ( the first one is a starter - 1500 pages). Cartridges are easily available and cost about $80. Printer footprint is small, perfect for limited space. Lastly, the printer looks great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars SMALL & THRIFTY, December 11, 1999
By A Customer
I was in need of a new printer, and prefered a laser printer. I picked this printer because of the brand name & honestly, the price. I admit I was a bit worried because it was so much cheaper than all the rest, but now that I own it I'm very happy. The set-up was quick & easy. The copies are clear & clean, and I couldn't believe how quick it was! I had previously owned a Canon Bubble Jet which took literally 4-5 minutes to print one page & ate ink like crazy. This Xerox printed the same page in 4-5 seconds. I'm very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing value, December 27, 1999
By Higher Ed Technologist (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
Who would have thought you could get a real-life laser printer for so little money? When I first saw this item on sale, I thought the price was a mistake. When I bought it, I half expected it to be too good to be true. Instead, I found myself with a printing workhorse. I share it on a network with two coworkers. It was easy to set up on our network, prints great quality text and images, and is reasonably fast. This printer exceeds the quality of a laser printer I purchased several years ago for over three times as much. Unless you have need of color printing, or have 20+ users sharing the printer, I can't see any reason not to get this gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up, good printing quality, perfect size
Installation was surprisingly quick and easy thanks to well-written and well-illustrated directions. Print quality is great, and if space is an issue, you'll love the size.
