Biography

Camp Lo is a rap group from the Bronx who melds hip-hop with jazz sensibilities and funk. After having a hit single, "Coolie High," from The Great White Hype soundtrack in early 1996, they released their debut album, Uptown Saturday Night, in February 1997. The album was reissued two years later on Arista Records, and a second album (Let's Do It Again) finally appeared in 2002. Five years later,… Read more in Amazon's Camp Lo Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

While they aren't the first to do so, Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede make a direct appeal from hip-hop's current generation back to the blaxploitation era on Uptown Saturday Night, which recrafts the up-tempo, party atmosphere of the swinging 1970s, resplendent in the musical and cultural iconography of Harlem- and Bronx-style blaxploitation. Even for listeners who never watched Shaft, Superfly, or The Mack, Camp Lo's songs carry themselves with a cool air of slick styles. As critics have noted, Cheeba and Suede's lyrics are often nonrhyming barrages of key blaxploitation terminology that--read conventionally--actually make no sense, but their spitfire pacing makes up in style what their verses lack in content (which is actually a pretty good description of blaxploitation, if you think about it). Much credit needs to go to producer Ski (who was also the musical mastermind behind Jay Z's impressive debut, Reasonable Doubt), who shows a smart sampling ear with bubbly pop tracks that are infectious enough to rock the party while still appealing to hardcore hip-hop heads. --Oliver Wang

5.0 out of 5 stars Gold Sugar, June 21, 2002
Quite honestly I can say that this is my favorite CD in my extensive collection. Sonny Cheba and Geechi Suede have the most ridiculous flows in the hip hop world today and their jive vocabulary is so dense it takes years to decipher, and yes it does make sense once you learn it. Tracks like Luchini, Coolie High, Sparkle and Black Connection are so [...] laid back, they make you want to crack open some bubbly and take a limo ride. Production is tight, including Trugouy the Dove from De La doing a bumpin banger on B-Side to Hollywood. Meanwhile straight diamond crook songs like Killin em Softly and Krystal Karrington stay dark yet smooth. Cheeba's got the most distinctive voice and Suede flows are insane. Often overlooked, this old school album goes back like chiropractors in a time machine, and keeps pleasant vibes trickling through your earhole.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Another Boogie Down Bronx under-rated Hip-Hop classic", August 25, 2005
Cooly Hi still gots me wild, fo' shee shee, player! Still sippin' on Amaret'ah! Man, these cats had flow! And there intricate and esoteric use of exclusive '70's old skool, Uptown slang was unparalell! Let's not even talk about the production, flawless! this is one major thing that Hip-Hop is lacking big time, ORIGINALITY! If you ain't up on this CD yet, do so, suga' booga'z! A must have for all Hip-Hop tenderonies & mackaronies!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most creative LP's to ever hit stores, January 8, 2006
By Chris (St.Louis,MO) - See all my reviews
This is some perfect any mood hip Hop. It canb appeal to the Jazz heads for it's smoothness and also has some good raw hip hop appeal to it. This is just a perfect blend music that sounds like it could have been recorded at any time by really any performer in some genre. It has many good songs like Rockin It-Krystal Harrington-Sparkling and of course This is It. I saw it in stores and picked up. It's a shame this was really there only release because this is pretty flawless

Very good c.d. This is just some smooth rap, good for relieving stress. They have a nice distinct style, that makes traffic disappear, and weekends more hype.
