Editorial Reviews

Robert Reigle

Gustavo Aguilar has produced a debut that is at once thoughtful and passionate, drawing from his solid control of technique but never forgetting the power of a simple melody or a single sound. With the contributions of such fine musicians as Wadada Leo Smith, John Bergamo, and Todd Sickafoose, Aguilar has come up with a recording that combines high levels of technique, thoughtfulness, and emotion, forming a listening experience that leaves permanent resonance.

Product Description

"'Zamzam' is a set of three works for one or three percussionists, and is intended to be performed simultaneously as a single musical wave."--Wadada Leo Smith "Almost every morning of my early childhood, my father would wake up my brothers and me to his joyful songs. 'Apa' is a song to celebrate being alive. An old Spanish saying, 'Faces we see, hearts we don't' is what my mother would always tell us as a reminder to be careful of strangers. 'Bamboo Blue Static' is a duet for percussion and double bass."--Gustavo Aguilar "'Tulumbaz' is a culmination of explorations to find an extended range of sounds on four standard timpani and was written for Gustavo Aguilar."--John Bergamo "The real Magic Tree grows in the Angeles National forest near the highway. It's really the most bizarre tree I've ever seen. Alone in the hot chaparral, this tulip-shaped tree shakes and sways like a snake-charmer. I chose to write Gustavo's piece as a strict solo for a single instrument with the desire to capture, at least for a moment, the feeling of eternal loneliness which must consume such a weird-looking tree, alone on a hill. 'Magic Tree' is fully notated except for a brief improvised section about halfway through."--Todd Sickafoose
