Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Ask anyone who grew up in the '70s and they'll tell you: hard rock ain't what it used to be. Need proof? Compare the real thing and their '90s counterparts on this soundtrack from a movie about four kids trying to sneak into a sold-out Kiss concert. Kiss contributes the title track and "Shout It Out Loud," two prime blasts of 1976 hard rock. The Donnas can only copy the painted ones' "Strutter." Everclear cruises by the numbers through Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town," while Pantera traces Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever." When Marilyn Manson attempts to put its own stamp on AC/DC's "Highway to Hell," the results are pretentious and boring, lacking all the kinetic excitement of the original. If the truth be told, nearly all the highlights are the original songs: Van Halen's goofy yet dexterous "Runnin' with the Devil," Black Sabbath's rumbling "Iron Man," Cheap Trick's masterfully silly call to arms "Surrender," and Thin Lizzy's deadly and virile "Jailbreak." No matter what technological advances you make, you can't beat a genre in its prime. --Rob O'Connor

2.0 out of 5 stars The Way the Soundrack SHOULD Be, January 9, 2006
I give this soundtrack 2 stars because it still has some great songs on it. However, whoever compiled it did two things wrong: 1) The left off so many other great songs from the movie, and 2) They have covers of these classic songs instead of the originals? For shame. Well, and also because they have Marilyn Manson doing ANYTHING at all. Someone who sucks as bad as him should not even be allowed in the same room as ACDC, much less allowed to cover their song. Anyway, if you ask me, the soundtrack should read as follows:

"Love Gun" by KISS
"Funk #49" by the James Gang
"Lights Out" by UFO
"Little Willy" by Sweet
"School Days" by the Runaways
"Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy
"Shout It Out Loud" by KISS
"Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group
"The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy
"Rock & Roll All Nite" by KISS
"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
"Problem Child" by ACDC
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick
"I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones
"Highway to Hell" by ACDC
"Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult
"Fox On the Run" by Sweet
"Strutter" by KISS
"Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones
"Calling Dr. Love" by KISS
"Come Sail Away" by Styx
"Whole Lotta Rosie" by ACDC
"Love Hurts" by Nazareth
"Running With the Devil" by Van Halen
"Detroit Rock City" by KISS

Write this list down and download the songs this way. It's so so so much better. The actual soundtrack that plays during the movie, I give 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good soundtrack, October 28, 1999
By A Customer
The DETROIT ROCK CITY soundtrack features mostly good stuff. 3 KISS tracks, a cover of KISS's Strutter, some original recordings from the original artists of the 70's, and some covers of 70's songs. The new KISS track is great. Everclear's cover of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" sounds very good too as well as Pantera's cover of Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever. Other highlights include the original recordings of Running with the Devil from Van Halen, Iron Man from Black Sabbath, Jailbreak from Thin Lizzy, a live version of Surrender from Cheap Trick as well as others. For me, the worst downside was Marilyn Manson's horrible cover of AC DC's Highway to Hell. The song should have been left alone and AC DC's version should have been on the record. Manson turns it very techno and it is hardly recognizable to people who like the original version. Aside from that, there are a few other imperfections although not as great as the Manson song. The KISS cover sounds a little weird. The music on it is good and anybody who knows Strutter will recognize it right away. But the vocals sound strange. Songs like Little Willy and School Days don't fit in that great either but it could just be my opinion. But all in all, it is a good CD, especially for a soundtrack.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Actual Soundtrack, May 27, 2007
By T. Kelly (Greater Cincy, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I agree with the other reviewers who note that the soundtrack was missing most of the great songs from the movie. Reviewer J. Darwin listed a very impressive soundtrack listing which captures nearly all of the great rock songs from the film. I took on the challenge of capturing virtually all of the songs played during the movie, in the order that they appear. This includes background song clips on the radio, that were confirmed in the closing credits. Here goes:

I Stole Your Love -- KISS
Rock & Roll All Night -- MYSTERY
Love Gun -- KISS
Cat Scratch Fever -- TED NUGENT
20th Century Boy -- T-REX
Funk No. 49 -- JAMES GANG
Conjunction Junction -- BOB DOROUGH
Ladies Room -- KISS
Lights Out -- UFO
Little Willy -- SWEET
School Days -- THE RUNAWAYS
Jailbreak -- THIN LIZZY
Shout It Out Loud -- KISS
Frankenstein -- THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP
Makin' It -- DAVID NAUGHTON
Wild and Hot -- ANGEL
The Boys Are Back In Town -- THIN LIZZY
Radar Love -- GOLDEN EARRING
Iron Man -- BLACK SABBATH
Problem Child -- AC/DC
Christine Sixteen -- KISS
Turn To Stone -- ELO
Surrender -- CHEAP TRICK
I Wanna Be Sedated -- THE RAMONES
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) -- RUPERT HOLMES
Highway To Hell -- AC/DC
Black Magic Woman -- SANTANA
Every 1's a Winner -- HOT CHOCOLATE
Rebel Rebel -- DAVID BOWIE
Convoy -- WC McCALL
Shock Me -- KISS
Godzilla -- BLUE OYSTER CULT
Fox On the Run -- SWEET
Boogie Shoes -- KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND
Strutter -- KISS
Blitzkreig Bop -- THE RAMONES
Popcorn -- HOT BUTTER
Beth -- KISS
Fire -- OHIO PLAYERS
Muskrat Love -- CAPTAIN & TENNILLE
Calling Dr. Love -- KISS
Come Sail Away -- STYX
Rock Your Baby -- GEORGE McCRAE
Whole Lotta Rosie -- AC/DC
Love Hurts -- NAZARETH
Runnin' With the Devil -- VAN HALEN
Love To Love -- UFO
Detroit Rock City (Live) -- KISS
The Boys Are Back In Town -- EVERCLEAR
Highway To Hell -- MARILYN MANSON
Nothing Can Keep Me From You -- KISS

There you have it. 51 songs. "Love Gun" by Kiss appears a second time in the movie just before the 8-Track tape gets creamed on the Interstate. There is a song playing in the Radio Station elevator as the guys go to pick up their tickets that I can't make out, so that is missing. I also replaced Mystery with Kiss on "Rock & Roll All Night". My 3-CD set of the true soundtrack is complete. Great movie. If you're up to the challenge, make that true soundtrack!! Rock on.
