Ersieh is not her only recording!, October 15, 2003
The surprising thing is that "Ersieh" is the only CD available at Amazon.com! Shakila has a number of recordings to her credit, all of which are stunning.I have three of her commercial recordings in my library all of which I purchased in a CD store in Dubai, UAE. The others are "Geryeh Dar Raagbar" and the 1993 release titled "Kami Ba Man Modara Kon". Though I tried to find more of her material while I was in Iran, I was disappointed since this style of "popular" music is forbidden in the ultra-conservative nation. Her CD's are available there but only as contraband. Shakila has made many other fine recordings, but since they are hard to find commercially, you may have to resort to peer-to-peer file sharing...I live in South Korea and the chances of me finding Shakila in a CD store here are next-to-none so I have been forced to use these resources...the commercial outlets in western countries are missing an opportunity if they don't stock more foreign music and don't encourage radio stations to air it. I first heard Shakila when I was recording a broadcast on an ethnic radio station in Edmonton, Canada (CKER) back in the early 1990's. At that time I didn't know who I was listening to. Some years later, however, I was in the Dubai branch of Music Land and I recognized the instrumental version of the song I had recorded from the radio in Canada. I asked the clerk if he knew of a song version of the music and he directed me to the Iranian section. Shakila's producer and arranger is Mehrdad Pakravan and it was a recording by him that was playing in the store. Like most Middle Eastern music, it is produced for the domestic market. Few artists ever break out into the international market. This is a great pity, since there is some excellent music to be heard from all over the region. Most western radio stations seem reluctant to play songs sung in a foreign language and therefore the listening public is denied an enormous wealth of exciting exotic music. Shakila and Mehrdad Pakravan score top marks in my book. I recommend anything you can find of theirs...but you may have to look hard and long!
