Editorial Reviews

Wissmann

NIGHTLIFE - Enormously diverse, there still is a common denominator for Stace England's Peach Blossom Special; Southern California. Much of the new CD by this erstwhile singer/songwriter features that wondrous combination of pop harmonies, country, folk and art rock textures. Throughout, it's inundated by a John Steinbeck vibe that the promised land has turned out to be somewhat of a bummer. . . the genius is in making it feel good, not just once, but repeatedly.

Product Description

4.0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Most Alt-Country, July 31, 2002
By A Customer
I got this record based on word of mouth and was pretty much blown away by the diversity of the album after a few listens. Just when you think the record is heading one direction, country, folk, pop etc. England veers off into something else. But remarkably, it all seems to flow together. A particular favorite is the spoken word Ten Dollar Whore which is about meeting a prostitute in Memphis, and manages to be touching, hilarious and profound all at the same time. England seems to avoid the clichés and traps of most alt-country acts and sounds like he's genuinely lived the subject matter, which is depressing at times but ultimately uplifting. I have not heard of him before or since but I certainly hope he continues to make records of this quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Blind buy, good buy, March 22, 2000
As a student of Southern Illinois University, I've heard much of about Stace England and his music, but I've never actually caught a show. I preceeded to buy the disc because of its good reviews in the Carbondale area. I'm not disappointed. The acoustic guitar work on this album is very good and very clean. I'm not a country music fan, but I enjoy this cd because it's rock with a hint of country and folk. I'm in favor of supporting local bands, being a musician myself, and I am very pleased to see quality work come out of the Carbondale area. Most of the songs are bittersweet, including my favorite, "Road To Reality." The chorus's lyrics particularly caught my ear: "I remember the dream/ that got wasted on the road to reality." Being a musician, I understand the difficulties of touring as a local, and for the most part, unheard-of artist. England gets his point across very well through his music, and hopefully will continue upon his "dream," and not waste it upon the "road to reality."
