Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Heralded as the future of Irish music, Kila discourse in a cut-loose Afro Celt sound that's fresh, funky, and altogether disarming. In polar opposition to what many modern bands do, aping acoustic beats with electronic means, the septet Kila hit a stellar tribal ceilidh groove, translating what might otherwise be electronic sounds back into acoustic indigenous instrumentation and timing. The group sings, chants, and raps in Gaelic, surrounded by fantastically frenetic fiddle, Uilleann pipes, flute, bodhran, bouzouki, guitar, and bass. Tóg É Go Bog É (Gaelic for "take it easy") features 14 brilliant pieces of caustic beauty that range from dervishlike hypnotic frenzy to ambient-textured soundscape to flyaway acid reels to generously progressive tripped-out traditionally based tunes. Kila are the Pogues meet Dave Matthews Band multiplied by the Incredible String Band meets Dirty Three, but not really. They'll blow your lid. Guaranteed. --Paige La Grone

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, December 29, 1999
By Scott Brown (Ann Arbor, MI) - See all my reviews
Not sure if the guy who called this album "bad date music" even listened to the same recording as me. This album is incredible! Every song has freshness and vitality, and I rank it among my favorite (along with Lunasa's Otherworld) Celtic recordings. Ronan O'Snodaigh's gaelic singing is wonderfully funky, not "forced" as someone previously mentioned. Outstanding tracks include "Gwerzy" (with it's whirlwind of sounds), "Jasmine", and "Double Knuckle Shuffle". The vocal tracks Bi Ann and Leanfaidh Me' are also a lot of fun. This is one group you will definitely be hearing from in the coming years! I can't wait to see them live!

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, Invigorating, Facinating music from Ireland., July 25, 1999
By A Customer
Kila's music draws from so many musical styles, it would take days to track them all down. Their sound and instrumentation is Irish but with African percussion joining the bodhran and references to eastern European folk music and Andean flute music kind of popping up everywhere. The lead singer's vocals are stunning and distinctive with a definite nod towards Bob Marley. Kila's instrumentals are a little more "spacious" than other Irish folk bands, sometimes straying into New Age territory, but this is exciting, acoustic music that had me dancing in my living room.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only thing better is to see them live!, September 9, 2004
While in Ireland, a bodhran player recommended KILA to me as an exciting and unique Irish band and he especially praised "Tog E Go Bog E". Like all Irish music it is full of motion and rhythm, but much more complex and compelling. These are accomplished musicians who weave and build their songs into a sound that can physically be felt. To see them live, like I did in Dublin, is an experience I do not ever think I'll match again.
