Editorial Reviews

Yes, it's true--the Teletubbies show their denominational stripes in Merry Christmas, Teletubbies, though this 90-minute set on two tapes (one green, one red) celebrates the holiday in gentle ways. Voice trumpets play Christmas carols, children in the live sequences engage in festive activities--picking out Christmas trees, singing, doing arts and crafts--and a Christmas tree appears in Teletubbyland bearing four presents. Laa-Laa gets a box of Christmas decorations, which the Noo-noo slurps up then sneezes into perfect place all over the Tubbytronic Superdome; Dipsy gets a noisemaker, which everyone has to work together to pull apart; and Po gets a cloud, which drops snow to dance in. In the only sequence with strong religious imagery, Tinky Winky receives a star, which floats out of the box and into the sky. The Tubbies rise up and follow, and it flies--no, not to the manger, but to the top of the Christmas tree. This is relatively uneventful stuff even for the Teletubbies, but kids will enjoy this video as a new way to celebrate the season with their favorite friends. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun in Teletubbyland!, December 14, 1999
By A Customer
My 2 year old daughter LOVED this tape, and I actually enjoyed it, too. The Teletubbies are really geared towards the 1-2 year olds, where as other PBS shows (while still enjoyable to toddlers) are better suited to 3-4 year old children. For a first tape though, I would skip this one (the Christmas season just doesn't last that long....) and pick up a copy of "Favorite Things" or "Nursery Rhymes."

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable. Well worth the money., November 4, 2002

This video is cute. It is filled with the typical Teletubbie antics- dancing, tumbling, repitition etc. Two video tapes to sit through is a little bit too much Teletubbies for me. However, there are some natural stopping points built in, similar to other Teletubbie videos. You can easily let your child watch a 20 minute segment and turn it off and you are not turning it off in the middle of something.

Although my three year old has turned onto other things like Sesame Street, Dragon Tales and others, he still enjoys the Teletubbies. My 20 month old really enjoys this video.

I realize there is some controversy with Teletubbies. However, I think they teach sharing, caring, being nice, cleaning up after yourself. I have also read many reviews which say that Teletubbies don't teach anything, but they do- the repetition is important for young children and these videos teach them predict, which is an important skill in reading. They also teaches children consequences, if you walk through Custard, you have a mess and so on. It is hard to look at it with adult eyes and see all that, but there is much more there going on than talking.

If you are going to allow your child to watch TV or Vidoes, Teletubbies are as good as any other video if not better, particularly for the younger children. I particularly like the built in stopping points that make it easy to allow for short little bits of tv watching.

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful video tape!, March 1, 2000
By A Customer
This Christmas video tape of the teletubbies is a nice change from the other tapes, it helps the little one enjoy christmas in their own way, my 16 month old just loves to watch it while she sit in her teletubbie chair, and also they can watch it all year long not just at christmas time,so let the kids enjoy watching all the teletubbies tapes it a break from the real world!
