Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Radiohead's favorite German avant electronic pop group as stated in Rolling Stone. Vocals sung and spoken, in German by Valerie Lali, lead all compositions with sensual and thoughtful emotion. The music is leftfield electronic, dance-pop, dub and abstraction, often played with real guitars and drums as well as digital. Lali Puna band members include Markus Acher (Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio), Steffi Bohm aka (Ms John Soda, Couch), Micha Acher (Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio, Ms John Soda), Christoph Brander (Tied Tickled Trio, Console), Florian Zimmer (Iso 68, Fred Is Dead). Originally released in 1999. Darla Records.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than most downtempo, June 19, 2002

(REAL NAME)
When I first picked up scary world theory, I wasn't expecting much. About five minutes after putting scary world theory in my player, i went out and bought this album (tricorder) as well. No disappointments.
This group is music to sleep by. The lyrics are poetic but not intrusive or witty. A lot of electronic "retro" artists employ witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics(Laptop, miss kitten), or are chock full of references to kitschy things(nasa), and/or have bubble gum childish pop lyrics (freezepop). Lali Puna has simple yet well- crafted poetry which flows with the music to create a more meaningful whole. yet both the words could stand alone as poetry and the music could stand alone as downtempo electronica.
For fans of soviet, fischerspooner, and ladytron, as well as fans of idm such as boards of canada and autechre, lali puna is a must-listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave Pioneer Of The New Euro-Electro-Dreampop!, May 18, 2002
By "fredofla" (LOS ANGELES, CA. USA) - See all my reviews
YES! Here is the ravishing and groundbreaking album that is rumored to have been one of Thom Yorke's main points of reference for the post-Kid A/RADIOHEAD makeover. All comparisons to late STEREOLAB aside, this sonically rich, top-notch and electro-adventurous German dreampop band really hails from a more locally home-grown lineage that includes the likes of NOTWIST, DONNA REGINA, LAUB, BARBARA MORGENSTERN and QUARKS. In other words, these beautiful beat-laden and exotic songs are part of the recent movement away from the recent glut of post-rock/Indie/guitar domination....into a new world of brazzenly heavenly electronic twists and turns. The female vocals sung in a combination of both German and English are just as sly and seductive as the heady methods used to manufacture and deploy a host of ethereal sonics that are guaranteed to hypnotize and transfix the listener. A cosmic dancey joy to behold from start to finish. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
