Hmm. The sixth charitable & Friends endeavor by superstar tenor Luciano Pavarotti is one of the strangest, though it will undoubtedly delight the singer's legion of fans who hold him sacrosanct. Here, he duets with Mariah Carey, Joe Cocker, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Boyzone, B.B. King, and others in some of the most unexpected mixes of Europop, classic rock, and opera ever seen onstage--all for the sake of the children of Guatemala and Kosovo. The oddest moment belongs to B.B. King's trademark (and telling) "The Thrill Is Gone," where Luciano, obviously at a loss for words, simply hums a duet with Lucille. On Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," Pavarotti sings an entirely different tune in Italian. Is this what our Nemorino (Pavarotti's glorious role in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore) has come to? Is this the shape of classical to come? Is your money better spent by sending it directly to the War Child charity or perhaps by hearing one of Pavarotti's classic recordings? I own almost every fund-raising compilation CD from the "Pavarotti & Friends" collection and this CD is one of the best. The contributors to this CD did a fabulous job, especially Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin who ventured to sing in Italian and pulled it off beautifully--I have a newly-found respect for Ricky Martin because of it. Of course, Pavarotti was marvellous and outshined everyone--his voice is just so powerful, magnetic and overwhelming. I think everyone should buy this CD. There is something on it for everyone to enjoy. And not only will the listener benefit, but the people of Guatemala and Kosovo will, too.

REGARDLESS WHAT YOUR REVIEWER STATES THIS 'PAVAROTTI & FRIENDS' BRINGS TOGETHER AN ECLECTRIC GROUP OF PERFORMERS WHO ALONG WITH LUCIANO LEAVE THEIR COLLECTIVE EGOS BACKSTAGE FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF A STELLAR PERFORMANCE AND RAISE FUNDS FOR A WORTHY CAUSE. RICKY MARTIN'S ANNOUNCEMENT THAT HE WILL SING MAMA IN ITALIAN WAS A SMART MOVE AND HE CARRIED IT OFF. ALL SINGERS PERFORMING WITH LUCIANO SOUND LIKE STUDENTS INCLUDING PLACIDO & CARRERAS.NOTICE THE EVER PRESCENCE OF ZUCCHERO, A FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR. THE VIDEO IS EVEN BETTER SHOWING BACKSTAGE AND PRIOR TO THE EVENT. I GUESS YOUR REVIEWER MISSED MICHAEL JACKSON, WHOM APPARANTLY THOUGHT OF HIMSELF FIRST. TOO BAD. HE IS A GOOD PERFORMER. TO ASSEMBLE A VAST ARRAY OF TALENT FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE CONTINENT IS A TRIBUTE TO THE 'MAESTRO' AND SHOWS THE RESPECT HE DESERVES FROM ALL PERFORMERS. THE VARIOUS GOVERNMENTS SHOULD TAKE HEED AND FOLLOW SUIT.

A very nice mix of common music that's even nicer when Pavarotti joins in with his classic voice. Mariah Carey more fabolous than ever. Ricky Martin sounds like a singing seventh grader with Pavarotti as his teacher.
