Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

While a Senior at Berkeley High School, Gretchen Lieberum entered the Reno International Jazz Festival and Competition, and won first place in the Jazz Vocal Solo Category. She began writing songs while singing for a funk band she started in college with bassist Mike Cruz called Supersauce, playing at venues such as the Filmore in San Francisco and The Catalyst in Santa Cruz. Several years later, she started jamming and writing songs with piano man Jacob Aginsky, eventually creating the music that became Gretchen's debut solo CD, Three AM.

Three AM, completed in March of 1999, was produced by Greg Poree, who has worked as a musician and as a producer with artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Sting, Vinx, and Stevie Wonder. Gretchen recently made her first music video for the single "These Things", directed by Jacob Estes and Danny Passman.

Product Description

Acoustic bass, piano, acoustic guitar, percussion, drums, Rhodes, D.J., cello, trumpet and vocals combine to form the Jazz and Acid Jazz inspired original music of Three AM. Vocalist/Lyricist Gretchen Lieberum lists such diverse artists as Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Sting, Spearhead, and Cassandra Wilson as influences.

5.0 out of 5 stars criminally overlooked...., May 28, 2002
How Ms. Lieberum is still relatively undiscovered is beyond me. I'm not a big fan of vocal jazz and when I first read about this album it was described as vocal jazz so it didn't initally pique my interest. But I saw this album on Amazon and read up a little more on her and her music and I got this CD. It's probabaly one of the best albums I've heard in a while. This album is incredible in its style, musicianship, songwriting and above all originality. What do you call this? Haute Hop? Trip Bop? To classify her just as vocal jazz is pretty unfair. Ms. Lieberum's combination of straight ahead vocal jazz with trip hop makes for an incredibly interesting and enjoyable listen. Highly, highly, highly recommended for anyone who likes intelligent, original, listenable music.

5.0 out of 5 stars You ought to listen to an album like this., September 24, 1999
By A Customer
Somebody once told me that good music organizes your imagination. Well let me tell you that this music does that and then some. The first time I put it on it took me on a trip. As a working record producer and a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., I am always relieved and grateful to hear a female voice who's speaking about reality in her music rather than just talking the talk with some silver pants cause Puff Daddy gave her a check and said go. I get tired of all these wanna-be R&B "soul singers" who pop themselves around like they've got something urgent and mean to say when all that comes out of their mouths is a constant stream of cotton candy. This album by Gretchen that I just bought is real, my friends--straight from the heart and it's a big heart too. Listen up: her lyrics are deep and the music has got layers that'll make you go "God damn!". Listen to an album like this and you'll remember why you care about music.
