Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The Wave is the flagship of the Leatherman line, and we would argue that it's the company's most versatile multitool to date. It comes loaded with 17 different tools, including everything from pliers to screwdrivers to wire cutters. We really like the Wave's quality construction, its four locking blades, and the fact that the user can get at the knife without having to open up the whole tool--a nice improvement over the original model. While nobody's going to replace a tool set or do major auto repairs with the Wave, it's absolutely invaluable for a wide range of quick, on-the-spot jobs. --Brian Trinen

5.0 out of 5 stars makes swiss army knife look like a toy, October 26, 2006
i love this thing.

i got it almost 5 years ago & still use it. i keep it in my bag (briefcase type bag for work) for those "just-in-case" moments, since i can't carry my 30 pound toolbox around with me to work. can't count how many times i've used it & in how many different ways.

the phiilips head is a real phillips, not a 2-dimensional stamped piece of steel like the swiss army knifes (SAK's), so you can get good grip on a screw & not strip the screw or chip the tool (see SAK). it doesn't replace my real tools, but like i said you never know when you'll need something, so it's great to have this around at all times. i even used the can opener to pop a lock when i was locked out of my office.

not sure why one of the reviews complained about its weight (maybe it has to do with close proximity of the reviewer to Switzerland, who knows). i think the weight actually speaks to its durability & quality craftsmenship. now if you're looking for something to carry in your pocket, then i'd agree it's too heavy, but considering i throw it in my briefcase, backpack, glove-compartment, etc, it's perfect for me. i recently bought 2 more, one to keep in my emergency hurricane kit & one for my construction inspection bag.

i have 3 SAK's (gifts thru the years) & all have at least 2 of the tools chipped or broken. the leatherman's tools also lock into place better than the SAK's, plus you get pliers & a wire cutter (even with the basic model).

good luck with your shopping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great multi-tool, August 8, 2007
I had the old original leatherman tool and loved it. I bought the Wave when it came out and it's better and safer than the original Leatherman. The serrated blade is a nice addition, as are the locking feature and one handed operation of both blades. I also prefer the new pliers, compared to the older model. I do agree with a previous reviewer that some of the smaller tools are difficult extract from the tool, but the weight of the tool has never been a problem for me.

Of all the multi-tools I've tried, Leatherman makes the best, hands down. Why someone would choose a swiss army knife over a leatherman is beyond me. Back in the day, they were cool, but function and quality take priority over aesthetics when it comes to tools.

Spend the money and get a high quality, useful multi-tool that will last you for a long time (no toothpicks here!). When it comes to multi-tools, Leatherman is the only way to go.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Tool Only for Die Hard McGyver Fans, August 2, 2006
This 1000+ tool doesn't really do much because it weighs 10 lbs and is rather awkward, most of the tools are difficult to pull out and you need instructions because they are so compact and held together by a balstan ring which makes it hard to turn at angles. I took this with me to the mountain ranges of Oslo and threw it away because it was so burdensome to carry around. Suffice it to say that I eventually needed it to cut down a tree which fell upon my hut.
