Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Boasting 18 volts of power, Makita's combo pack delivers the turning torque and high blade speed to get even the toughest jobs done. This package combines a powerful drill/driver with the 6-1/2-inch circular saw that garnered both the Popular Mechanics One of the Ten Best Tools of 1999 and the Hanley-Wood Tools of the Trade Editor's Choice awards. The drill exerts up to 404 inch-pounds of torque at up to 450/1,400 rpm, depending on which of the 18 torque settings and two speed gears you select. The drill's distinctive tip-up design makes for easy use all day either overhead or at shoulder height, a big advantage when you're dealing with heavier, 18-volt tools. For a cordless, the saw is remarkably powerful. Spinning its large 6-1/2-inch blade, it slices through two-by materials with ease, even when beveling at 45 degrees. When we tested it, we were immediately impressed with how effectively the electric brake stops the blade rotation--a safety feature we demand in a saw designed to take up ladders and other potentially precarious places. And--like practically everyone else in the world--we really appreciate the attention to detail and quality in Makita's legendary motor, with its tough ball-bearing construction. Simply put, these are tools designed for extended use under the toughest job site conditions. The motor's brushes are accessible via an outside panel, too, and easily replaced--a handy feature you won't find with other brands. --Justin Paul

5.0 out of 5 stars Beefy, December 3, 1999
After using up two combo kits from DeWalt (1 14.4 &1 18 ) One from Porter cable (19.2v)And Two from Craftsman (18v)in the last 3 years , I finally stepped up to real tools with many real world benefits. I Love the solid, balanced feel. They work all day. They really are superior tools. For instance, with heavy use the output shaftof many cordless drills gets loose and floppy. Makita chose a metal gear case with a large ball bearing support for its massive output shaft. This means no floppy chucks and smoother operation. The motor is physically larger, also supported with ball bearings. This enables the unit to produce higher torque with more efficiency than the others. This means longer life,But more importantly, it means MORE POWER !The saw just walks through 2x10's. At the same time it is quite capable of producine fine cuts for trim. The light is is on par with any 18v light.I do have a little trouble removing the batteries from it though. All in all the best combo kit on the planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars SMALL PACKAGE WITH POWER TO SPARE..., November 19, 1999
By sevil natas (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
You can't beat this combo. Both pieces have more power than seems possible without a pain in the ass cord to trip over. The saw cuts through 3/4" plywood like butter and the drill dials in to delicate screw driving and out to masonry drilling power. All in a light easy to handle package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tools for the professional or the novice, November 29, 1999
By A Customer
New to the home improvement and craft scene, I've spent a lot of time researching and trying different power tools. I have limited use of my hands and am not very strong so tool weight and balance are as important as performance. This Makita 18V combo provides all that and more. The saw has incredible balance making crosscutting staight lines a breeze. I also love that the blade is on the left so you don't have to look over your hands at what you are cutting. The saw does the work. Most 18V drill/drivers are heavy especially for overhead work - again the balance on the Makita takes a lot of the muscle strain and stress out of the work. I own other brands of saws and drivers for other purposes and never thought I could handle a big 18V - not true with Makita. If my husband is really good I might let him use it - once! God I love cutting wood and my Makita combo makes it a joy.
