Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Barely qualifying as a "concept" album, the second half of this album tells the story of Happiness Stan, a young man who sees the moon turn from full to half and decides he needs to find the missing part. It's a rather odd tale that's adorned with lush, psychedelic arrangements. The spoken narrative that links each song (provided by one Stanley Unwin in barely decipherable Clockwork Orange-style English) contributes to the yarn's surrealistic atmosphere. The real gems on this recording, however, are the six songs that make up the record's first half. From the sludgy, acid-jazz feel of the title track straight through to the comic plea for peace, love, and understanding ("Lazy Sunday," a song that opens with the universal sentiment "Wouldn't it be nice to get on with me neighbors..."), the real concept at work here is based on unforgettable songwriting. --Percy Keegan

5.0 out of 5 stars This one goes to 11, June 23, 2000

I bought this record ten days ago. I have listened to it at least once every day since. I was blown away, it's every bit as good as any Beatles, Who, or Rolling Stones album; actually it's probably better. It climbed its way into my top 11 albums of all time list, along with such gems as: "The Village Green Preservation Society" by The Kinks, "London Calling" by The Clash, and "Revolver" by The Beatles.

Needless to say I bought several other Small Faces albums since. I recommend "From the Beginning" and "Small Faces."

5.0 out of 5 stars Oooh what a mindblast! Stay cool won't you., October 3, 1998

Perhaps the album that captures all that Marriot and his mates achieved. From mod soulboys to stadium rockers, via tongue in cheek psychedelia (just check Steve's music hall approach on Lazy Sunday.) Can't really say much more without it sounding obvious, dip it in gold and give it to your grandchildren. Nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild, Wacky, and INSPIRED LUNACY!!, September 2, 1998
The original vinyl album of OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE was packaged in a round sleeve (I still have mine), and that was just one thing that set it apart from other music in 1968-1969. The Small Faces were not the most technically adroit of musicians, but they made up for any shortcomings by being creative and wildly original. In fact, their masterpiece OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE was so far ahead of its time that the music-buying population just wasn't ready for it. That meant that the album never had a wide circulation in the United States.

I don't know whose idea it was to intersperse the Small Faces songs with Stanley Holloway's spoken pieces, but it was divinely inspired lunacy! I would get side aches from laughing so hard, and all through high school and college I listened to the album so much that I wore it out. Then I couldn't find a replacement and spent the next quarter of a century looking for one. I still love OGDEN'S NUT, and my two sons think it's hilarious, too! It deserves to be better known.

I know that my meager descriptions couldn't possibly do this album justice. Critics have often compared "Ogden" with "Sgt. Read more
