Biography

When the term “New Wave of British Heavy Metal” (NWOBHM) was coined in the late 70s, Saxon was firmly planted in the thick of it. Though the line-up has changed considerably over the 30 year career of the band, Biff Byford, founding member and frontman, has largely ensured that Saxon remained true to the formula which won them a place in the hearts of British rockers.

The band secured a record deal… Read more in Amazon's Saxon Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pinnacle of Saxon's Career, November 23, 1999
By Burton Caruthers (East Haven, CT United States) - See all my reviews
If you must own one Saxon CD, this is it! One of the greatest metal albums ever released. This was Saxon at the height of their raw brand of power metal. The production is the best to date on any Saxon CD, and the music attained a new level for the band. " Power & the Glory " and " Warrior " are complete bonecrushers. " Midas Touch " is a great song which was unavailable on early American releases of the album ( it was replaced by an updated version of " Suzi Hold On " from Wheels of Steel ). The finale, " The Eagle Has Landed ", may possibly be Saxon's best song ever. This album was a watershed point for Saxon, a landmark of their stunning best work, which unfortunately also preceded their slow demise into commercialized, lame formula rock-metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars (Person from Ireland is confused). This album rocks!, December 1, 1999
Out of all of them, Power and the Glory easily shows Saxon in the height of their form (besides their most recent albums which are also great). The production, too, was very open and powerful - much moreso than previously. Powerful guitar? It's everywhere from note 1! Drumming? - Nigel Glockler is simply explosive and precise, and his drums sound awesome. I was lucky enough to see the '83 tour with Iron Maiden. Those were the days. Sounds just as good now as it did then - that's the true test of music. Will we be listening to 'Kid Rock' 17 years from now? Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, May 1, 1999
By fwdh@wg.sssnet.com (Massillon,Ohio) - See all my reviews
Power and the Glory is without question Saxon's finest recording in their long and illustrious career. Every aspect of this work combines all the elements that make Saxon a great band. The production values that Jeff Gilmax obtained gave the recording a massive ambient soundstage that augmented the powerful songwriting and arranging skills of the band. From the title track to the epic guitar work Paul Quinn unleashes on the album closer,The Eagle Has Landed, this is one effort every real Saxon fan must add to his/her collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but they've done better.
The title track to this album is my all-time favorite Saxon song, but I think "Wheels of Steel" is a much better album. Get that first, then move on to this one.
