Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Whisper to the Wild Water is a sweet sonic journey of liquid swirling arrangements and the frothy mellifluous wash of Máire Brennan's looping vocals. Here the singer for her family band, Clannad (and elder sister to the better-known Enya), ventures farther astream from her previous solo efforts to incorporate more flutes, pipes, and Celtic traditional touches amid her penchant for spiritual themes and the light world rhythms of drum loops. Ever mindful of familial strength, Brennan collaborated on the writing of this collection with her husband, duets with her mother on one cut, and features her 5-year-old son intoning the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi in Gaelic. Singing in both English and the tongue of her native County Donegal, Brennan creates a work that, while not overtly Christian, is gently uplifting and attuned to the healing properties of song. Like a cradle rocked by the sea's lulling tide, Whisper to the Wild Water soothes, pacifies, and guides the listener to a delicious place of well being. --Paige La Grone

5.0 out of 5 stars Better with Age, December 16, 1999
By Amanda (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews
I'd have to say Maire's done it again. Her newest album, Whisper to the Wild Water, is, I think, her best solo album she has out so far. Filled with wonderful Irish melodies and haunting lyrics Maire mixes contemporary beats with the traditional Gaelic and Irish instruments (ulinean pipes, Irish harp, etc.) which has made her famous. She blends her christianity in so well it appeals to both non-christians and christians. The lyrics and music mix well with the powerful opening track, Follow the Word, to the lovely prayer, Peacemaker with her son, Paul, on it, and the deeply moving Ageless Messengers, Maire has gotten better with age. I recomend this to any Clannad or Enya fan or someone who just likes music. Whisper to the Wild Water is deeply moving and I can't wait until Maire comes out with her next album.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for your cd collection!, October 29, 1999
By Kevin (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
Maire Brennan keeps getting better and better. The angelic voice, lush harmonies and celtic rythms make this a stand-out album. Maire's spiritual awakening has given her a peace that flows from her music and wraps the listener like a warm blanket. The only thing that could have improved this album would have been the inclusion of Ciaran, Noel, and Padraig (the other members of Clannad)and their soothing harmonies. Lets hope that the inclusion of Maire's son Paul means that the Brennan tradition will live on for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice, April 2, 2000
By Steven A Leduc (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
Maire, lead singer of Clannad, has written another gorgeous collection of songs. Every fan of Celtic music--and certainly every fan of Clannad!--should have this disc in their collection. My favorite tracks are #1, #5, and especially #7, "Ageless Messengers"--the vocals (particularly the chorus, which is in Gaelic) are so glorious they give you goosebumps. [Note: While other reviewers have praised this collection as "Christian," you certainly don't have to be Christian, or even a believer, to enjoy the beauty of these songs. Trust me.]
