Although this group is partially comprised of Silicon Valley venture capitalists--as evidenced by the CD's title--the music is a throwback to the '60s Haight-Ashbury scene, when making it in mainstream (read: rat race) society was the last thing on anyone's mind. There were other things in people's minds at the time. Unfortunately for the Flying Other Brothers, the two worlds still don't mesh very well. There are spirited attempts at capturing the essence of West Coast psychedelic rock, such as the midtempo ballad "Your Shoulder," which could have been written by the
Velvet Underground and Nico if they were on happy drugs. The best moment on the CD is "Six Days on the Road," which convincingly recalls the percolating side of the
Grateful Dead circa "Truckin'." Not a bad debut, but one hopes the Flying Other Brothers decide to spend less time making deals in the penthouse suite and more time practicing in the basement.
