Editorial Reviews

Review: James Bickers, Progression, USA
Vanishing Point: In Thought (CD, 49:54); Angular Records Wonderful stuff here: Vanishing Point's In Thought is an energetic addictive metal album with just enough progressive tendencies to make it demand your full attention. Of the many things this band has working in its favor, perhaps greatest is singer Silvio Massaro. His tone is mature and confident, and reminds at times of Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), but non too much. Guitarists Tom Vucur and Chris Porcianko craft melodies which stand up well on their own, and become even stronger when fleshed into full songs. Take the opening melody lines to " In Company Of Darkness," for instance - strong, vibrant and fresh. There's a gorgeous piano ballad here, too ("A Memory"), which the band pulls off just as well as it does the heavy stuff. A great, satisfying, well-rounded record.

Product Description
Vanishing Point's debut opus is more than just an excellent album, it covers the full range of the melodic metal spectrum with a unique sound, drawing the listener through alternating patches of power and light. Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Queensryche enthusiasts will enjoy this sophisticated album by Australia's new Melodic Metal masters.

3.0 out of 5 stars The best is still to come, July 8, 2006
I was turned onto Vanishing Point through their second album Tangled in Dream. They are a melodic progressive metal band similar to Vanden Plas and Nightengale, and have a strong Dream Theater influence, though they are not as technically-focused as DT. I was so impressed by this Australian band's second album that I had to hunt down their debut.

While In Thought is a good initial effort, it doesn't really showcase just how good Vanishing Point is. The whole album tends to be a bit monotonous. The songs, which are in a melodic progressive rock (leaning towards metal, but not quite there) vein are all very similar, and maintain an even pace and tempo throughout. They're good songs, but could benefit from some more exciting, faster paced moments. I should point out that the band definitely took care of that on their follow up album. Tangled in Dream's first track, Surreal hits the ground running and is my favorite Vanishing Point song to date. While In Thought was initially disappointing, it has grown on me after a few listens. The band put out a decent debut album, but it is hard not to be critical when you are exposed to their better work first. I think it's similar to hearing Dream Theater's Images and Words and then listening to When Dream and Day Unite - it's a good album, but you know the next one is a whole lot better.

I'd recommend In Thought to anyone who has heard and enjoyed Vanishing Point's second album. If you're new to the band I recommend picking up Tangled in Dream first. In Thought is a good album from an impressive band and definitely worth owning, but probably not the best one to start with.

3.0 out of 5 stars only one or two songs are good :-(, January 21, 2000
By Vadim (New York) - See all my reviews
I bought this CD becasue I listened to a MP3 fomr the Web somewhere, and thought it was excellent. Unfortunatelly that was the only good song on the CD that I liked - "In Company of Darkness", the rest of the CD is OK, but not great.
