Product Description

Amazon.com Review
DataViz Desktop To Go frees you from the clunky Palm desktop application by making it easy to share data between your Palm organizer and any of several desktop information managers running under Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT. With support for Microsoft Schedule+ 7.0 and 7.5, and Microsoft Outlook 97, 98, and 2000, this product smoothly synchronizes contact information, to-do list items, notes, and other information between hand-held and desktop computers.

DataViz says this product will work with all Palm OS device units, including the new Palm VII and HandSpring Visor devices. I used this product to synchronize Schedule+ 7.0 data between a Windows 95 computer and a Palm III and found that it worked very well in both directions.

When you set up Desktop To Go (at installation time or later), a neatly organized interface allows you to establish rules about how data is transferred. You can choose to have data from your desktop application transferred to your Palm or vice versa. You also can specify that the two databases be synchronized; this means that you can enter data on your Palm and in your desktop application between HotSyncs, then have the software merge the two databases at HotSync time so all the data appears simultaneously in both environments.

You can also specify how collisions are handled. An example of a collision might be when you've entered updated contact information for the same person on both your Palm and your desktop application the same day. With the instructions you enter initially, Desktop to Go will do what you've programmed it to.

Once you've configured these rules, Desktop To Go does its work with near-transparency. Palm users can HotSync just like they normally would, with the only difference being that some Desktop to Go status boxes pop up during the process (and do not require attention). --David Wall

4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable for anyone who uses any version of Outlook, December 30, 1999
By A.S. Miller (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
I have been using Desktop To Go for the last six months, synchronizing my Palm III (and previously used it with my PalmPilot Professional) with Outlook 97 (at home) and Outlook 2000 (at work). I synchronize from several times a week to several times a day, and I find it an invaluable tool.

The latest version (2.505) has added several valuable new functions, including synchronization of only changed items (which speeds up synchronization), and an optional feedback panel that shows what is being synchronized as it happens. There is also an option that let's you quickly and temporarily turn off Outlook synchronization for those times when all you want to do is install some new software.

As with any software, I would advise carefully reading the documentation before using Desktop To Go for the first time.

I had a difficulty with installing Desktop To Go on a newly installed Windows NT equipped computer (it later turned out that the NT installation was screwed up), giving me the opportunity to find out how good DataViz Tech Support really is. This is how I found out about the very fine debug option that allows the manufacturer to get a detailed report on all synchronization activity and ways to resolve even the most stubborn tech support issues.

I recommend that anyone who wants to use Palm with Outlook try this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product for Outlook synchronization, October 12, 2000
By John "John" (PHOENIX, AZ USA) - See all my reviews

I've used this product at work to synchronize my Palm III with Outlook on our corporate network for over a year now. I've been very happy with it. The only problem I had was the first time Daylight Saving Time changed. In Arizona we don't switch to Daylight Savings Time and Desktop to Go assumed we did. My times got screwed up. I called their support line and they quickly showed me how to correct the problem. It's worked fine ever since. There a lot of nice features and options regarding synchronization but you don't have to mess with them if you don't want to - it works great right out of the box. I highly recomend this product. It's stable, easy to use, they have helpful support staff.

I'm using this under Window NT 4.0 and Outlook 2000 (initially under Outlook 98).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sync for Outlook, August 22, 2000
By Stresspuppy (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
i'm using DTG v2.506 which is the newest version as of 8/00. i'm
currently using this to sync with Outlook 2000 (under Win98 for both
work and home) and find it an invaluable tool. it installs easily and
works smoothly with Outlook -- i'm running Palm Desktop 3.0.1, Hotsync
3.0.4, Palm V with OS 3.3 and have no problems yet.

i really enjoyed
the options for syncing things like date book, address book, and to do
list within a specific time span (i.e., sync all tasks 60 prior and 90
days forward from the date of the sync). the to do list will also
allow you to only import to the Palm those items still open, thereby
leaving the completed tasks on your desktop as archive.

there
isn't much of a manual here but it is an intuitive process. as with
any new software, be sure to back up your data before preceeding and
be attentive to the initial sync.
