Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Is a Marilyn Manson studio album like thunder without lightning? The name Manson is synonymous with stage theatrics, and studio albums aren't designed to capture such flashing, ephemeral excitement. That being the case, a live Marilyn Manson album is one step up from a studio disc and one notch down from a concert. This powerful 14-song, 70-minute set actually ends with one studio track, "Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes" (also on the Celebrity Deathmatch album). Featuring such Manson concert favorites as "The Beautiful People," "The Dope Show," and the band's breakthrough cover of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," The Last Tour on Earth is incendiary, expletive-strewn, and darkly irresistible. Manson is a commanding performer, though not one for the young or upright, as he spews on about LSD and sex with cops, performs "Antichrist Superstar," and has the audience chanting "We hate love, we love hate!" prior to a particularly raucous rendition of "Irresponsible Hate Anthem." That said, The Last Tour on Earth is an exhilarating outing from one of the '90s' boldest personalities. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly better than AntiChrist Superstar, April 16, 2000
I must say that when I first put this CD in the CD player and listened to it I was blown away, the talent of Manson and his band members is astounding. And I cannot BELIEVE that some people are ignorant enough to say Manson is a weak songwriter! As I have heard some say before, If Bob Dylan were to put some of these lines from Manson's songs in his songs he would be considered the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. I really enjoyed this album and I could just see Manson on stage performing with the band and the back-up singers. This album is his best since AntiChrist Superstar. It may even be better. Now to some of you who have left negative comments about this CD, (If you just complained only about the music, then this does not apply to you, it only applies to those who are judging Manson for who he is.) most of you most likely never even HEARD any of the songs on this cd and I think you're nothing but narrow minded a**holes. Another thing, you talk about your Christian values and everything and talk about how much a horrible pest Manson is, but what about in the bible where it says "Judge lest ye be judged." According to the bible you have NO right whatsoever to judge Manson, his opinions, his actions, or his beliefs. Unless you want to be judged in the same way by God... I respect Manson for fighting back against the hypocrites and narrow-minded people of this country and I can't wait until his next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best rock live albums to grace my speakers, January 5, 2005
By Darrien Tyler (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
If I had one complaint about this cd it would be the equalization, as it's kind of bass heavy, but it adds a rawness to the recording, and does contribute to the live feel. So that being said, on to the rest of the review.
This was such an amazing tour, it was the first Manson show I ever attended and I've been a devout fan ever since.

"Inauguration of the Mechanical Christ" : Manson in the smoke and lights starts to rise from the floor on a cross made out of flashing tv's as we hear "This isn't me, I'm not mechanical". The lights are flashing, Twiggy's bass kicks, John5 compliments him with nice guitar phrasing, Pogo throws some effects in for good measure and after another minute, the squealing guitar of the first actual song begins.

"The Reflecting God" : Other than "The Love Song" on the most recent Against All Gods tour, this was by far the best song to get the show started, and it's just as amazing as the studio version. When Manson says "I'm tired of dying for your f***in' sins" in the middle of the song, you feel like you're there at the show. The band is at it's tightest during this tour, and they all lock up on "Shoot, Shoot..".

"Great Big White World" : Great version of this song, as close to the MA version as a live recording can get, John5's guitar parts shine in perticular on this song and listening to it now makes me even sadder that he's no longer in the band.

"Get Your Gunn": Probably the fastest version of this song that I've heard, man, do they haul through it. This song sounds alot more aggressive here and it rocks.

"Sweet Dreams": Complete with crowd clapping and a recognition roar as the guitar intro begins, the first hit for the band and though by now I'm sure they hate playing it, but it always sounds great live. We also have the hell outro on this one too, taken from the end of "Long Hard Road Out Of Hell" which brings it to a big climax before the announcement of Omega and the Mechanical Animals...

"Rock Is Dead": Tapping into the Omega persona, I remember Manson rocking out with this shiny cape, female backgroud singers and confetti blasting as it started and it was amazing
to see. the energy the band had on stage during this song was phenominal.

"Dope Show" : Not much different except that we have the said female singers singing the harmonies along with Manson and the typical altering of city name for the lyric "the drugs, they say..."

"Lunchbox": I'm convinced that since Daisy Berkowitz wrote this guitar lick, that he is the only one that can play it in the right tempo. John5 plays the opening riff with such speed that I'm suprised that band can come in on time.
On this version we also get the arena singalong, with Manson dividing the crowd from left to right and down the center for the "I want to grow up, wanna be..." chorus and it's cool to hear even if you weren't there to participate.

"I Don't Like The Drugs" : Manson tells about his drug dream(which is worth the price of the cd by itself) and then the big DRUGS neon sign appears, the female singers come back out and they groove through the song.

"Antichrist Superstar" : Once seeing him live, you can't listen to this without seeing him up on the podium, in all his glory, directing the army of hands in the air on every, "hey".
This is one of my favorite tracks and comes across even better with the live feel envolved, they've chosen to omit the ending (the time has come, it is quite clear) on the recent tour, but it's here, and it's so powerful and intense that the disc could've ended here.

"Beautiful People" : "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people? he asks, before going into the classic beat that could only be song. It brings down the house and then some.

"Irresponsible Hate Anthem" : I love hearing the chant of "we hate love, we love hate" just as on the ACSS cd, and the scream of "f*** it" before the explosion of music assaults our ears.
Ginger's drumming on this song impresses me every time, he is indeed a technical musician and a major force behind the band.
This is the most energetic performance on the disc and it brings the show to an end that leaves us wanting more.

"Last Day On Earth": Apparently this was one of the only performances of this song and it is definitly memorable.
All acoustic and stripped down of the digital vocal effects on the chorus, it makes this song that much better then the version of MA. I prefer this one, because it's a lot more emotional, not to mention how rare it is to hear.

APOTET" : The only studio track on here and a excellent song at that. One of the best non album tracks to surface and one of the most industrial sounding since "1996". The lyrics are great and the music is tight, even reviving a part from ACSS in the middle.

The bottom line: no matter if it's on disc or live and in person, Manson rocks and this is another must own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Head candy, November 22, 1999
By wxyze "wxyze" (Dallas, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This is the most exciting live hard rock recording since the Ozzy/ Randy Rhodes Tribute album. Manson is a preternaturally brilliant entertainer, and his transcendingly engrossing and absorbing stage show is captured wonderfully here. Made my speakers bleed.
