Product Description

Product Description
Before the wild success of Pokémon, there was a little-known pocket creature game for the Nintendo that received considerably less fanfare and much critical acclaim. Dragon Warrior: Monsters is an updated version of the innovative 1989 game Dragon Warrior. As with Pokémon, you must find and capture creatures, and you can trade them with your friends.

While 151 pocket monsters wander through the various Pokémon games, Dragon Warrior: Monsters features over 200 monsters to collect in this single title. When you have captured them, you can breed and train your monsters to develop special skills. With the optional game link cable, you can battle or breed with other monsters captured by a friend.

GameSpot Review
Dragon Warrior was one of the defining series of RPGs back on the NES. Most DW fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Dragon Quest VII, the first Dragon Warrior game to appear on the PlayStation. But fans of the series as well as fans of Pokemon (the game, not the phenomenon) should definitely take a look at Dragon Warrior Monsters. DWM puts you in the role of a small boy named Terry. Your sister has been kidnapped and dragged to a mysterious kingdom populated by monsters and monster trainers. You, in hopes of freeing your sister, must become the world's best monster trainer. Many of the game's monsters have been taken from earlier incarnations of the series, so expect to see the little dew-drop slimes, crazy-looking bats, and the like. You'll walk through various landscapes, fighting and, if you're any good, catching monsters to add to your roster. Battles occur in typical RPG fashion, with your monsters doing all of the fighting. Unlike in Pokemon, all of your monsters fight at once, and you occasionally battle more than one foe. As you progress, your monsters will level up, and you'll earn money and items. The money is mostly needed to enter monster fighting tournaments, though you can, of course, also buy things like healing herbs and warpwings. You progress through ranks in these tournaments, much as in Bio Motor Unitron for the Neo Geo Pocket or Monster Rancher for the PlayStation. If you win the tournament, you'll be allowed to represent the kingdom in a larger tournament, which in turn will get you closer to freeing your sister. The graphics in the battles are great. The monsters all look very sharp. Out of battle, you're represented in typical small-guy RPG fashion, with your train of monsters following behind you. The soundtrack is well composed, and as such the music is always a welcome part of the game. If you've already "caught 'em all," and you're looking for a game to tide you over until Pokemon Gold and Silver are released near the end of the year, Dragon Warrior Monsters is exactly what you're looking for. It may not have the cutesy, over-merchandised appeal of Pokemon, but the rock-solid gameplay makes it a worthwhile endeavor.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great game for the Pokemon mind!, November 22, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game was, in everyway the most greatest kind of RPG on Gameboy Color! If you're a Pokemon fan then you might disagree. But this game takes you in the game and lets you solve all kinds of problems. The sounds of the game are really pretty interesting and the masters and bosses are incredible. This game will keep you satified for a long, long time! The fact of raising monsters and breeding them and combining them into different monsters justed makes you stuck to the game! This is pokemon with more drama and action! You buy items and join with allies to form a team of unbeatable creatures, cute and strong! There are a lot of cute and cuddly monsters and powerful monsters. This game is an interllectual challenge and is very indept. You will have a great experience with this wonderful game and the climax of the game is always happening! Choosing animals and training and trading has never been this interesting! What are you waiting for? Buy it already!

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT Pokemon, April 23, 2000
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
When you here about this game you instantly think, Pokemon Ripoff, but it's not! Its totally different. Unlike pokemon this game allows you to breed monsters to get new ones. This game is also very long so you won't get bored playing it. In the game you play Terry, who has been sent to the castle of GreatTree to find his kidnapped sister. The king of GreatTree wants you to win the Starry Night Tournament for him so he makes you a Monster Trainer. If you win the Starry Night Tournament you can wish for your sister back. In the game you can battle from G-A to S class raising your rank as a trainer before you compete in the Starry Night Tournament. Once you beat a class a room opens revealing a Mystic Portal where you can go to find monsters. As you beat higher classes the Monsters in the Mystic Portals get harder to beat. Plus there is a boss for every level. This game is really awesome and is a must for any RPG fan. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE GAME TO GET!, February 7, 2000
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
It has every option pokemon has plus alot more! You can trade monsters, battle monsters, and even breed monsters via the link cable. Monsters are either male or female and any species can be bred to form more powerful monsters. The newborn monsters will be able to learn the skills of both parent monsters and depending on the level of the parent monsters when breeding will result in how powerful your new monster will be. When battling with the link cable you will be given the option of placing one of your monsters on the line. Should you loose the battle, the monster you wagered will be transported to the other persons game.you are also able to battle with and against up to three monsters at a time, and each monster can learn quite a few different attacks. The graphics are far better than pokemon, as is the music. If your looking for a game similer to pokemon gold and silver but are tired of waiting then give this game a chance! No pokemon fan will be dissapointed!
