Product Description

Product Description

With shopkeepers, pedestrians, and The Man hassling you, what's a skater to do? You need to find a place to put in the bruising, bone-braking hours needed to hone your skills. With Street Sk8er 2, you simply turn an abandoned warehouse into your own personal skate park. Use the natural obstacles such as pipes and rails as departure points for your tricks and combos (over 200 to put in your repertoire). Once you've got the space as you like it, slap it on a separately sold memory card, truck it over to your friend's PlayStation, and see how your friend does.

Once you've got the moves down, take them to the crowd in the three-level Street Tour World Championship. Race against the clock while collecting special trick points in 11 events that include street, halfpipe, and park courses. Don't worry if you have trouble hanging with the big boys--Street Sk8er 2 has a variety of skill levels and a free-skate mode that lets you indolently explore the game's many courses.

GameSpot Review

About a year ago, Electronic Arts released the first skateboarding game to come along in a long time. It was one of the lamest PlayStation games to come out that year, but it must have sold well enough for other companies to sit up and take notice. Now we've seen games like Thrasher: Skate and Destroy and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, two good skateboarding games that show that the genre definitely has a lot to offer. Now, EA is getting back into the game with a sequel, Street Sk8er 2. The game takes a lot of its influences from games like Tony Hawk, and as a result it isn't a failure, as its predecessor was. Much of the game is essentially a race against time. You need to get from point A to point B in X number of seconds, occasionally hitting some checkpoints that add time to your clock. The catch is that you must finish the course under a certain time while earning a certain number of points. So you must strike a balance between speed and tricks to ensure that you reach the finish line with enough points to proceed to the next level. The level design is pretty nice, containing lots of ramps and various things you can ollie over, grind on, and, if you're not careful, smack your face against. The levels also feature multiple paths and shortcuts, as well as windows, barrels, and other breakable objects. You can pick from a few different skaters, each of whom has a different set of tricks. But executing high-scoring trick combos isn't exactly difficult, as your skater sort of "homes in" on the lip of the ramp you've jumped from, making it a challenge to actually wreck when skating in pipes. The secret to tricks is to simply hold down L1 or R1 as you're going airborne from the edge of the pipe - this causes you to spin. Then, you simply jam on as many different directions and buttons as possible and let go of the L1 or R1 button before you land. The game automatically straightens you out, making it almost too easy. If you can't even handle this, there's an auto-trick mode that makes things even easier. Aside from the main competition mode, there's also a free-skate mode, which lets you simply skate around the areas you've previously visited in the main mode. You can also create your own skate park out of prefabricated parts, including ramps, pipes, and rails. The game also has a multiplayer pool duel, supporting both a split-screen mode and link cable (!) support. Graphically, Street Sk8er 2 looks significantly better than the original game, but not nearly as fluid or as sharp as Tony Hawk. The moves don't transition particularly well into one another, making big trick combos look extremely jerky. The levels are extremely large and look pretty good. The soundtrack is filled with songs from artists like Del the Funky Homosapien, Shootyz Groove, and Ministry. The game's sound effects are also quite nice and fairly realistic. Street Sk8er 2 is one of those games that would have been much better received if another, better game didn't exist. In this case, that game is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Still, Street Sk8er 2 is a huge improvement over the original, and skaters looking for something to do while waiting for Tony Hawk 2 to ship would do well to check out EA's second offering.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. 3.0 out of 5 stars good game for the most part, June 22, 2000

this game graphically and in many other ways is better than Street Sk8er, the levels are mcuh better and you have to work at the moves instead of pressing "X". however, whoever made this game must be a poser cos what once had good punk music now has lame metal music. not something that you'd want to skate to. how many other skating games do you play that skate to Static-X and Deftones? especially when the first one had all punk bands. the music was what Street Sk8er had going for it the most. also, the announcer on this game is 10 times more annoying than the first one. so, aside from all that, it is a good game but there are much better games out there for us skate punks such as grind session, tony hawk, and some others that i have yet to check out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like the real thing., August 16, 2000

Given that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is bound to be rented out at your local video store, and always sold out at retail outlets, and never *ever* available used, this game can give you a temporary skateboarding fix. It appears to use the same engine as Pro Skater, with a similar look and feel to both games.

The difference is in the details. Tony Hawk lets you string together hundreds of moves to make wicked combos. Street Skater seems to have about three moves per character. TH requires real skill to be land tricks, SS lets you land flat on your face and still pull off a trick. TH's control configurations are more intuitive -- maybe it's because I learned them first, but it seems like SS is harder to control. Street Skater's levels are massive, like TH's, but since each level is timed and has a linear progression you have to make from start to finish, it's not easy to explore.

The only plus on SS' side is that it has a skate park editor, which is fun to play around with. But I found myself wishing I could create a park and skate it with Tony instead of SS four characters, and TH2 is coming soon and features a better editor.

Like I said, SS is a temporary fix. You'll only go through its three levels so many times before you'll crave more levels, more space, more goals, more characters, and better play control, and you'll find yourself getting Tony Hawk for whatever price you can.
