A Remarkable Success!, December 22, 1999
Ireland's pride and joy, The Corrs, are congratulated on their spectacular unplugged performance and excellent album. Never failing to amaze us, this is yet another fantastic album which deserves much praise. Consisting of both new and old tracks, they were able to deliver mesmerising pieces such as 'Only When I Sleep' and 'Forgiven Not Forgotten', beautifully complemented with splendid orchestral arrangement. Songs such as 'Radio', 'At Your Side' and 'Old Town' were introduced for the first time with favourable outcome. The tune to 'Radio' is somewhat unique, differing it from other tracks, yet is able to blend in well. For a good source of encouragement and inspiration, 'At Your Side' and the cover version of REM's 'Everybody Hurts', helps (both lyrically and melodically) provide reassurance and warmth to one's heart. In 'Old Town', it has been said that Andrea Corr shows certain similarity to that of Karen Carpenter from the Carpenters, based on her voice and the catchy tune of the song. A true breathtaking track was the cover version of Mary Black's 'No Frontiers'...a lovely duet performed by Sharon and Caroline Corr, with just the simple playing of the piano and these two angelic voices - It is purely serene. The sibling quartet's rendition of Jimmy Hendrix's 'Little Wing' is a perfect example of Celtic-Pop, blended together. Listening to that celtic touch in this track makes one wonder of the amazing combination and how much there is to be admired. For those who have a burning desire and affection for Irish tunes, be rest assured that 'Toss The Feathers' and 'Lough Erin Shore' will be of NO disappointment whatsoever. The tin whistle, violin and bodhran are played so beautifully, that it's not a wonder if one's mind were to runaway, picturing Ireland's Shore when listening to 'Erin Shore' itself. As for 'Runaway', it has made its mark as one of the first and best Corrs love songs ever, even more in this unplugged version. Included in this album is the single for 'Rainy Day' - a bubbly and cheerful song, it works in putting a smile on your face. Well designed, with a nice CD sleeve layout and good photography of pictures, and cardboard boxed together with the 'Rainy Day' single, The Corrs Unplugged Album makes a perfect gift for all ages...be it for someone else, or for your own heart's content and listening pleasure.
