Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Grandfather though he may be, Tom Jones still stalks the stages of the world clad in a tuxedo, the very personification of testosterone-fueled cool. Thanks to a career made mostly on the stage, where women continue to pelt him with undergarments, his image is well defined. His recorded legacy is somewhat more diffuse, though, as this set amply proves. There's torrid main-room Vegas fare such as "It's Not Unusual," "Delilah," and "She's a Lady," plus the coy "What's New Pussycat" and the bombastic Bond theme, "Thunderball." But Jones also scored, somewhat surprisingly, with country-flavored material such as "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Detroit City." Like the other 20th Century Masters sets, this one is inferior to a previously existing greatest-hits package--in Jones's case, the 1998 Best of Tom Jones. Compared to that more generous collection, there's not enough here to get your panties in a bunch, much less make you want to wing them at Mr. Jones. --Daniel Durchholz

Product Description

The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."

To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at http://www.ilovethatsong.com/green.

UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam®, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Shorewood Packaging is the first North American packaging supplier to produce disc trays from PaperFoam®. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing But the Hits, April 16, 2000
From 1965 to 1971, the sexiest Welshman on the planet was Tom Jones. He also possessed one of the most powerful voices in popular music. This 20th Century Masters Series does a competent job in giving us 12 of his first 13 hits--missing is 1965's "With These Hands." While he was an anomaly amidst the British Invasion going on at the time, he placed five songs in the Top 10, including three million-sellers: "I'll Never Fall In Love Again," "Without Love There Is Nothing" and "She's a Lady." Jones' popularity even resulted in a TV variety program, "This is Tom Jones," from 1969-1971. His popularity was based as much on his sex appeal as it was on his singing ability. [Can you say "Ricky Martin"?] Even after his hit-making years, he was one of the biggest-selling acts in Las Vegas. [I can't see Ricky Martin living la vida loca thirty years from now in Vegas.]

Now, the question becomes, is twelve songs enough? Before this 20th Century Masters release, the definitive Tom Jones anthology was already available: 1998's The Best Of Tom Jones. It not only duplicates all twelve songs here, it adds minor hits like 1966's "Not Responsible," 1971's "Puppet Man" (written by Neil Sedaka) and 1988's "Kiss" (written by Prince and recorded with Art of Noise) and seven others for a total of 22 songs.

If you want only the familiar hits, stick with the 20th Century Masters release. If you want a more complete overview of Tom Jones' career AND all of his hit singles, get The Best of Tom Jones.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic showcase for a superb voice, September 21, 2004
Tom Jones' sumptuous, expressive voice is simply astonishing in this collection that includes many of my favorites...in fact the only Jones favorite of mine that is missing from this compilation is "With These Hands"...all the others are here: "Thunderball", "(It looks Like) I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Delilah", "The Green, Green Grass of Home", and many more that delight the ears and give one a sense of nostalgia for the days when music like this was popular.

Tom Jones burst on the music scene in 1965 with "It's Not Unusual" written by the man who "discovered" him, Gordon Mills, and from then on, the road was paved with gold for Jones and Mills, and in 1971, Paul Anka's "She's a Lady" gave him his biggest U.S. hit.
This is a terrific compilation (with only one song I don't care for, "Daughter of Darkness"), and is sure to please the Welsh Wonder's fans.

The sound is good, and total playing time is 37'26, not including the many times I hit the "repeat" button to hear his thrilling rendition of "(It Looks Like) I'll Never fall in Love Again".

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom sells his songs without even trying--but the CD could have added more, April 7, 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Tom Jones is certainly a budget priced CD for those of us on a budget; but I'm not so sure that it truly has all of his "best" hits. The quality of the sound, however, is quite good and the artwork is about par for this CD series.

"It's Not Unusual" starts the CD set with Tom singing his best--and that's pretty darn good! Tom sings with all his heart and I can see why he would appeal to women. Tom possesses the ability to sing a song and make you feel he's singing it directly to you; and that's no small feat. "What's New Pussycat" has a fine melody and Tom aces this easily. Tom handles the tempo changes like the pro he is and he never misses a note. "What's New Pussycat" is another strong track on this album.

"Thunderball" is quite a dramatic ballad that lets Tom show off the operatic qualities of his fine voice. "Thunderball" really shines when Tom sings it; and I predict you'll enjoy this number. "Green, Green Grass Of Home" has a slight country twist to it and this enhances the natural beauty of the ballad. The backup chorus bolsters Tom's performance and the keyboard work adds a lot to the musical arrangement.

"(It Looks Like) I'll Never Fall In Love Again" features Tom squarely front and center--and he deserves it! Tom Jones sings this ballad with great sensitivity and this amazes me. "Delilah" is a number that I always enjoyed; this was a huge hit for Tom Jones and I imagine it's still one of his greatest hits ever. "Delilah" has a very strong arrangement and Tom delivers this very well. The percussion strengthens the music that accompanies Tom as well.

"Love Me Tonight" has Tom at his best yet again! Tom handles subtle tempo and key changes very well and the backup chorus sounds very well on this tune. The brass enhances the music and "Love Me Tonight" really works very well. "She's A Lady" is another huge lifetime hit for Tom Jones; "She's A Lady" is a very special ballad that Tom sings flawlessly. "She's A Lady" lets Tom to sing about his one true love and he makes this a masterpiece in his capable hands!

The CD ends with Tom Jones performing "I (Who Have Nothing)." This passionate ballad gets the royal treatment from Tom and this makes a solid ending to this album.

Tom Jones is one of the most talented male singers who ever lived; and this CD proves it. Yes, it is budget priced; but I had hoped that it would have another song or two. However, we do get twelve songs; and that's not too bad. This CD is best geared toward the casual fan or people just discovering Tom's artistry. Diehard fans should continue to look for more substantial CDs.
